Officials: CSX Train Derails in Southeastern Virginia

Posted: Updated:

ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the cause of a CSX train derailment in southeastern Virginia.

CSX spokeswoman Laura Phelps said in an email that the derailment occurred in front of the International Paper mill near Franklin on Tuesday morning. She says the train was traveling from North Baltimore, Ohio, to Portsmouth, Virginia.

Phelps says it appears there were no injuries, leaks or spills.

Lt. Tommy Potter of the Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office said 13 of the 30 cars that had entered the mill complex came off the tracks. Potter says some intersections in the city of Franklin remain blocked by train cars. Cleanup is expected to take several hours.

Potter says CSX will investigating whether the derailment was caused by an equipment malfunction or something wrong with the track.
