The weekly pinnacle for any artist or label is hitting the coveted Number 1 spot on the Official Singles Chart.
For more than 60 years, being “top of the pops” has been the ultimate accolade - so, in 2011, to celebrate the biggest selling year for singles sales in history, the Official Charts Company created and launched the Official Number 1 Award to mark this special moment in an artist’s career. The initiative also kicked off 2012 – the 60th anniversary of the Official Singles Chart.
Launched in December 2011, the first ever recipients of the cool brushed aluminium trophy were the Military Wives to mark their single Wherever You Are becoming the Official Christmas Number 1 of that year.
BBC Radio 1 and OfficialCharts.com are involved with the ongoing presentation of the award, and to date the award has been dished out to a host of chart-topping acts. The roll-call is extraordinary, spanning One Direction, Gary Barlow, Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams, Rita Ora, Ellie Goulding, Paloma Faith, John Newman, Robbie Williams, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, “Mr Gangnam Style” Psy, Kiesza, Little Mix, Ella Henderson and many more.
Plus extra special Number 1 Award presentations have been made to McFly on The One Show to celebrate their 7 Number 1s, Olly Murs on The X Factor and the god of disco Nile Rodgers was presented with a trophy on C4’s Sunday Brunch when Get Lucky hit 1 million UK sales.
The award itself is a heavy duty, brushed aluminium trophy which looks as cool as can be on any artist or music executive’s shelf. While the first award for every new Number 1 Single is supplied free of charge for the chart-topping artist, additional editions of each award can be ordered by the people behind each success; whether you are an executive within the record label, publishing company or Management Company.
