Albemarle County Ranks Second in the Nation for Delivering Digital Services

For the fourteenth year in a row, Albemarle County has been named among the top ten most technologically advanced, cutting edge county governments of its size in the U.S. by the Center for Digital Government (CDG) and the National Association of Counties (NACo) in their annual Digital Counties Survey. Albemarle County, which competed with hundreds of counties nationwide, ranks second in the nation and first in Virginia in utilizing information technology to deliver high quality service to its customers and citizens based on a population category of 150,000 or less.

Traffic Shift on Rt. 29 Widening Project Thursday

Southbound traffic will switch to new pavement overnight for reconstruction of existing lanes

The first major traffic shift of the Route 29 widening project is scheduled for Thursday night beginning at 9 p.m. Southbound traffic will be switched to new pavement in the median from just south of Hollymead Town Center to Route 643 (Polo Grounds Road).


CACVB Announces the Capture Charlottesville and Albemarle Photography Contest

Deadline to Submit Photos is September 16, 2016

The Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau announced today a lucrative summer photography contest designed to identify the most captivating pictures of both Charlottesville and Albemarle County. The ‘Capture Charlottesville and Albemarle’ Photography Contest asks visitors and local photographers to share their most captivating snapshots of the area and compete for one of three cash prizes. The grand-prize winner will receive $1000, with $500 and $250 prizes going to two runner-up participants. The CACVB invites both amateur and professional photographers to submit their best entries. Winners will be announced in early October 2016.


New Transfer Station coming to the Ivy Materials Utilization Center

The Rivanna Solid Waste Authority (RSWA) and Albemarle County are pleased to announce that a new transfer station will be constructed on a parcel of land at the existing Ivy Materials Utilization Center (MUC) site. The new transfer station will be designed to meet all current regulatory requirements for solid waste handling while creating a more user-friendly experience by reducing wait times, improving traffic flow through the site, alleviating traffic congestion on household hazardous waste amnesty days, and providing room to streamline enhanced recycling at a future date. The new facility will retain existing services, including “tag-a-bag” household waste disposal, mulching, and special collections. 

Overnight Closures Resume at Rt. 29 / Rio Rd. Intersection

Contractor will install roadway and pedestrian lighting, seal and stain retaining walls

Beginning tonight there will be overnight lane closures on Route 29 (Seminole Trail) and Route 631 (Rio Road) in the vicinity of the new grade-separated intersection. The closures will allow the contractor to finish work, including installing lighting and sealing and staining the retaining walls, that was not required to be complete prior to opening the intersection to traffic.
