JRML and Fencing Center Collaborate for Lessons

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -

A group of fencers in Charlottesville are trying to help kids find their own inner Olympian.

The Blue Ridge Fencing Center hosted a family fencing lesson in a collaboration with the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library.

After an energetic match between two young fencers, Joseph Marsh and Ryan Foresman, kids got the chance to try themselves, using a pool noodle as a sword.

“It's not so much just you know the mind because if you don't have the body there's no way your mind is going to be able to succeed, but likewise but if you're only rushing forward and smashing at the opponent, you're not going to get anything done,” said Marsh.

Coach Nathaniel Sides added that the Olympic sport is challenging for its blend of physical and mental exercise.

“You have to map out what your opponent will do, how you're going to combat what your opponent is gonna do, and it's always kind of luck of the draw to see if it works,” said Foresman.
