Charlottesville Man Starts Petition for Peace Pole Monument

One Charlottesville man is proposing a solution as the city struggles with how to handle its displays of Confederate history.

Many people spoke up at last week's Blue Ribbon Commission meeting about removing controversial statues.

However, David Swanson started a petition to add a monument. He wants the city to place a peace pole in a prominent area.

Swanson says the city's current monuments represent wars and slaughter.

“Charlottesville was against attacking Iraq when that wasn't cool ... not everyone says that was a disaster but Charlottesville City Council was against it when it counted and numerous other wars and drone strikes and excessive military spending ... Charlottesville has a record that we should be proud of, and are proud of, for peace - but it's nowhere on the landscape,” Swanson said.

Swanson says adding the $200 peace pole is much cheaper than removing monuments. He is waiting to hear back from the commission on how to move forward.
