Delay confirmed for ABC High Definintion launch

NewsKevin Perry

EXCLUSIVE: An expected launch of the ABC’s main channel in High Definition this June has been delayed.

The ABC’s Director of Television Richard Finlayson, had previously announced the public broadcaster would provide a High Definition version of its main channel by June of this year. However the launch had has now been pushed back due to technical hold ups.

A spokesperson for the ABC confirmed the delay telling DeciderTV that the HD launch would now occur “later this year”.

The hold-up is believed to have caused by delays in upgrading broadcast equipment across Australia.

Technicians are currently working overtime to upgrade equipment for regional broadcasters WINTV and Southern Cross Austereo ahead of changes to their affiliate agreements on July 1st, causing the ABC to be put to ‘the back of the queue’ for upgrades.

The move to High Definition for the main channel means ABCNews24 will be switched to an SD Feed. The ABC has also previously committed to launching live streaming versions for all its broadcast channels this year.
