If you are planning to go for excursions near by Puri, then do not forget to pay a visit to Satapada. Located at a distance of nearly 50 kilometers from the coastal town Puri and and nearly 100 KM from capital Bhubaneswar Satapada on Chilika is very famous for Irrawaddy Dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris). ‘Sata’ means ‘Seven’ and ‘Pada’ Means ‘Village’, so the name Satapada means group of seven villages. It is located on the southern part of the Chilika Lake.  Satapada is also famous for Sea Mouth Island where Chilka lake meets the Bay of Bengal. This beautiful resort like holiday destination is worth a visit.

near Puri is famous for its Dolphins. In fact, there is a Dolphin center over here, which attracts a large number of tourists to this place very year. Satpada also provides the opportunity for viewing a memorable sunrise and sunset. It is advisable to reach there in morning hours and spent much of your time with Dolphins. One can come and watch the dolphins swimming in the blue waters of the lake and the sea. You can also see the dolphins doing their funny tricks over here. This exotic tourist destination enables one to get close to one of natures beautiful creatures. The Dolphin Motor Boat Association has a good number of boats, which one can hire, to embark on this adventure activity.The Motor Boat Association has rate chat for the different types of boats based on their capacity and duration of the visit. Tourists can also hire boats to go to Nalaban and Rajahansa Island.

You can also check out the Nalaban Bird Sanctuary located close by. It takes around 4 hours by boat from Satapada. Here you can check out the different varieties of migratory birds. More than 4.5 lakh migratory birds belonging to 101 species from as far as Siberia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Himalayas have arrived at the Chilika Lake in Orissa for their winter. Around 269,000 migratory birds were sighted in the 15.53 sq km-Nalaban bird sanctuary – an island in the lake.

Another major attraction is the Rajahansa Island. A 1 ½ hour boat journey across the Chilika lake from Satapada takes visitors to Rajahansa Island. These places are perfect for family vacations. Children get an opportunity to come close to Mother Nature and also learn about her. As this place is located close to the Chilka Lake, you can definitely pay a visit to this beautiful lake. Apart from Dolphin watching, one can also go for a small cruise in the nearby lagoon.

On the way to Satapada from Puri at a distance of 22 KM there is a place known as Brahmagiri and here the temple of Alarnath is located. Many devotees visit this temple during closing of Darshan at Jaganatha Temple of Puri during Anasara period. This period falls just before the Ratha Jatra ( Car festival ) time.

If planning to visit Satapada, then it is better that one comes here early in the morning. It is advised that one reaches this place by 9:00 in the morning.

Thus, you can come to Satapada and spend time with the dolphins. This exotic lake resort is definitely one of the most popular tourist destinations of the state of Orissa in India.

Satapada is having the resort accomodation from Orissa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. (OTDC). It is known as Yatrinivas and provides excellent accommodation although the food is quite ordinary. Rooms can be booked at the tourist offices in Puri, Chilika and Bhubaneswar. Online booking facility is also available.
