Debasish Mohanty

Full name: Debasis Sarbeswar Mohanty
Born on: July 20, 1976, Bhubaneswar, Orissa
Played for : India, Orissa
Style of Batting : Right handed batsman
Style of Bowling : Right arm medium fast

Debasish Mohanty is the first odia former Indian cricketer who played in 2 Tests and 45 ODIs from 1997 to 2001. He was a right-arm medium-fast bowler supported with natural swing. He has got much of his success in ODIs averaging under 30 and taking more than 1 wicket per game. But he has got a very little chance to prove himself in test cricket for India.

He was the second highest wicket taker for India in 1999 world cup behinds Javagal Srinath. And he was the instrumental in winning one of the Sahara Cup Series against Pakistan in Toronto in the 1990s. However, on return of Ajit Agarkar, his opportunities dwindled and he became in and out of the team for many occasions. In swinging conditions he is always be an obvious choice. However, he is not so good in Indian conditions perhaps because of his bowling styles. He was dropped in 2001 and slipped out of the international reckoning.

Mohanty also represented Odisha and East Zone in the Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy respectively. In 2006, joined Colwyn Bay Cricket Club in Wales as the club professional. He is presently employed by NALCO, Bhubaneswar. Currently he has been appointed the coach for Odisha Ranji team. He replaced the former coach Michael Bevan. He recently coached the East Zone team and East Zone created history by winning their first Duleep Trophy. His bowling action was rewarded by the ICC as the official action for The 1999 World Cup Graphical logo.
