Deokund Waterfall

Devkund or Deokund ( The bathtub of Gods and Goddesses ), a virgin fall in northern Odisha in the district of Mayurbhanj. It is beautiful picnic spot amidst green forests (Sal forest), has picturesque waterfall, which is a part of the Udala division of Similipal Forest Range can be visited via Nilagiri / Udala from Panchlingeswar. It is 90 km from Lulung, 69 km from Kuldiha and 87 km from Balasore. From Balasore there are regular bus services to Udala (59 km). From Udala there are jeeps for going to Devkund at a distance of 28 km, also regular govt. OSRTC and private bus services are available from Udala town to Devkund. The last 5 km trail is through a dense forest surrounded with hills. The lake formed by a waterfall jumping from a height of 50 ft to the Devkund.

The main attraction of this waterfall is the scenic and beautiful natural lake that formed due to the waterfall. The water fall is 50 ft high from the ground level. The water falls from the hill in five stages due to reservoirs that were built intermittently to check its flow. Thus this place is also called Pancha Kunda or the five reservoirs (Pancha means five in Oriya language). The five kundas or reservoirs are called Amrita Kunda, Ghrita Kunda, Haladi Kunda, Devi Kunda and Deva Kunda.

This place is an important tourist attraction, owing to its alluring waterfalls and natural beauty. On the top of the hill, beautiful Devi Ambika Temple is a renowned shrine of Deokund, which was built by the royal dynasty of Mayurbhanj in 1940. The hill top temple of Goddess Ambika is a special attraction of the place. The Devi is said to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga. Adding allure to the scenic place is the multi colored butterflies and variety of species of chirping birds all around. Devkund is situated at a distance of 65 km from Baripada and 140 km from Chandipur. One can hire taxis/Jeeps from Baripada and Udala.

Accommodation – Baripada and Balasore are the two nearby places where one can find decent accommodation. Though Udala is a tourist centre, it is difficult to find good hotels or guest houses. It is preferable that one reserves or books accommodation in the towns of Baripada or Balasore.
