The BBFC classifies linear Virtual Reality video and experiences for distribution on physical media under the Video Recordings Act 1984 (VRA) and via digital distribution under our digital video classification scheme.

When do I need to get an age rating for my work?

Video content distributed on physical media requires a classification under the Video Recordings Act 1984. Please see our video ratings page for information on how to submit. The BBFC’s Watch & Rate service also allows content owners, rights holders, distributors and platforms to obtain cost-effective digital age ratings for use on services offering Video On Demand (including sVOD), Electronic Sell Through and digital rental. Please see our digital video ratings page for more information. Theatrical VR content may also require a classification, please contact us for advice on this.

What can/can't I submit?

We receive content via a variety of platforms.  Please contact us on helpline@bbfc.co.uk for any enquiries regarding this.

In order to submit a work please make an entry on our extranet service.

If you do not have an account you may request one here.

How much does it cost?

Details of fees are available here.  Costs will vary due to distribution method.  Please see fees for Video, Theatrical and VOD.

Is there anything else I need to consider?

If you require a fast turnaround you may wish to consider our Pre-Booking Express Service.

We can give you advice as to what rating an unfinished work may receive. Full details can be found here.

If you are making your first submission for a VRA age rating you will be entered into the Video Packaging Review Committee scheme. This is a voluntary industry scheme that regulates the sleeves of packaged media. Full details can be found here.
