The ballpoint pen was invented 128 years ago. Since then, things have stalled a little bit. I guess itâs hard to innovate on something so fundamentally simple like a writing implement. But then again, maybe not. Meet Beyond Ink.
This pen is for more than merely writing notes. It does much, much more, and comes with a built-in 16GB USB flash drive, a 1000 mAh battery, and a stylus attachment for use with touchscreen devices.
New York, meet the worldâs tech scene
5,000 Tech leaders are coming to NYC this November to learn and do business. This is your chance to join them.
Itâs the kind of pen you would imagine MacGuyver or James Bond using. Except this is real, and you can buy it now for $70.
As a pen
Iâve been using the Beyond Ink almost exclusively for a couple of weeks now. As a writing implement, it excels. This is thanks to it being based on the fantastic Lamy ballpoint pen.
For those reading who arenât pen nerds like me, Lamy are a high-end German manufacturer of stationery. Although relatively expensive (their pens start at around $23 each on Amazon), they make up for their high price point by being exceedingly well-made.
This also means that if your Beyond Ink runs dry, you can easily get a refill, although I havenât felt the need to do this yet. A single medium blue ballpoint refill costs just $6 on Amazon. As with most things, you can get them cheaper by purchasing them as a multi-pack.
I prefer chunky pens. As a result, I have a built-in bias towards the Beyond Ink. To put it mildly, this has an undeniable girth. At 71 grams, itâs really heavy. Itâs built out of brass and thick aluminum. Youâd expect it to have some presence.
As a result, some may find that using it takes some getting used to, especially when you compare it to, say, a comparatively lithe Bic pen.
But this shouldnât put you off. In my own experience, I found it to be smooth and precise, and above all comfortable to use. Pairing it with a Moleskin ruled notebook was penmanship heaven.
Battery Life
The unique selling point of Beyond Ink is that it comes with a whole bunch of added extras. These are things that you might forget at home, or at the office. So, why not converge them into one coherent device?
First, letâs look at the battery charger. The Beyond Ink packs a 1000 mAh Panasonic cell into a relatively small, crowded amount of space.
I should state the obvious. 1000 mAh really isnât all that much. There are affordable portable batteries that offer over twenty times that. Itâs worth emphasizing that this is unlikely to charge your phone to full capacity. The Samsung Galaxy S7, for example, has a 3000 mAh battery.
But what the Beyond Ink does give you is a few extra hours of talk time until you can find a wall socket. And given the fact that itâs packed into such a tiny space, you can understand its relative lack of capacity.
Beyond Ink comes in two different variants. Thereâs one with a lightning cable for iPhones and iPads. Thereâs also one with a bog-standard MicroUSB connection for everything else. The model I reviewed is the latter.
My biggest frustration with the deviceâs charging features is the cord. This comes discretely hidden behind the penâs clip. But itâs just too damn short. It also required a fair bit of contorting in order to plug into my phone, and was prone to falling out.
Itâs handy, but Beyond Inkâs portable battery feature shouldnât be considered as a replacement for the real thing.
Storage
As previously mentioned, Beyond Ink comes with 16 GB of built-in flash storage. To access this, you have to unscrew the top. This reveals a reversible USB connection, which is also used to charge the deviceâs built-in battery.
Thereâs not much worth saying about the USB drive itself. You shove it in. You copy files to it. You inevitably forget to safely eject it before unplugging it. Itâs all very straightforward.
Ergonomically, things get a bit interesting. Youâve got to remember that the Beyond Ink is 15.6 centimeters long. Most USB drives are a fraction of that. As a result, I often found myself accidentally knocking it when grabbing things from my desk.
But itâs worth emphasizing out that penâs staggeringly good build quality meant that despite my clumsiness, I didnât break it.
I should also add that although this wasnât an issue for me (I own a 2012 non-retina MacBook Pro), I imagine the sheer thickness of the Beyond Ink would pose a problem for those with extra-thin ultrabooks.
The stylus tip
The Beyond Ink comes with a rubberized stylus tip, to be used on touchscreen devices. Unlike the battery and the USB flash drive, this isnât attached to the device itself. This means that youâve got to remember to carry it with you.
And did I mention itâs a tiny piece of plastic? It is, perhaps, the definition of âlosableâ.
To attach it, youâve first got to remove the bottom of the pen. This presents another problem. If you lose this, your Beyond Ink ceases to be a useful writing implement.
Like the pen, the tip is pretty thick. This makes it great for most basic tasks, but for anything that requires precision, youâre best looking elsewhere.
The bottom line
The Beyond Ink is a great pen. I mean it. Itâs comfortable and extraordinarily well built. Itâs heavy, but not too heavy. Itâs precise. I love it. But as a USB flash drive and battery, itâs merely passable.
First, letâs talk about the battery. Here, I can forgive it for its flaws. Thereâs just not all that much space to cram in much capacity. That said, it lacks the endurance youâd need in order to throw away your standalone battery charger, which defeats the point of the Beyond Ink somewhat.
The built-in USB flash drive works fine. But I felt that it was undermined by the penâs form factor, which simply isnât conducive to being used as a flash drive. Similarly, the stylus worked just fine. But the fact that the pen doesnât include a space to place the stylus tip felt like somewhat of liability.
You canât deny the ambition of the Beyond Ink. And if youâre willing to look past its flaws, you can order the it from the official Beyond Ink website.
