Ghost in the Shell’s live-action movie now has a trailer

Whether you’re a fan of 90s anime and manga, or you simply dig futuristic Japanese cityscapes and high-octane fight scenes, the new trailer for the live-action film, Ghost in the Shell, is certainly worth a look. Check it out above.

Scarlett Johansson plays Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg law enforcement officer in search of the truth about her background. If that sounds like an odd choice for a film set entirely in Japan, you’re not alone.

The decision to go with a caucasian actor for the protagonist’s role was met with considerable backlash from fans of the series. Producer Steven Paul responded by downplaying the Japanese elements in the movie, but as The Verge notes, the footage shown in the trailer, which features all-too-familiar streets adorned with kanji signage, hardly helps to dispel any of those concerns.

We’ll have to wait until March 31 next year to see if the film can transcend its identity crisis and fittingly pay tribute to one of the world’s most popular manga franchises.
