Taylor Sheridan rolled into the Sundance Film Festival this week with his directorial debut “Wind River,” which according to our Noel Murray, makes good on the talent of the screenwriter behind “Sicario” and “Hell Or High Water.” But it’s not a surprise that as Sheridan did the rounds in Park City, many were curious about “Soldado,” the sequel the electric “Sicario” that’s now filming.

We’re not even a full week into Trump’s America, but it seems each passing day comes with something new that causes simultaneous feelings of outrage, fear, and horror. The latest is an executive order on immigration, which features, among other things, suspending visitor visas from Muslim-majority countries includingIraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. Xenophobic and hugely misguided, the announcement sparked immediate protests, and the movie industry is already responding.

Taraneh Alidoosti, the lead actress in Asghar Farhadi‘s Best Foreign Language Film nominee “The Salesman,” has announced she will not be attending the Oscars.

New Video Essay Explores What Can Be Learned About Scientology From Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘The Master’

Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “The Master” covers a lot of territory as it tracks the post-World War II dysfunction of a Naval veteran who briefly finds a purpose with the enigmatic cult leader Lancaster Dodd, but how it glances against Scientology can’t be ignored. From the parallels to the life of L. Ron Hubbardto certain practices within the belief system, the film puts clues to the controversial church throughout.

30-Minute Podcast Explores Hollywood’s Career Changing The Black List

“Here’s to the fools that dream,” goes the tagline for “La La Land,” and it’s a perfect summary of Los Angeles and Hollywood, where the clich that every busboy is a screenwriter and every bartender is an actress seems to be pretty close to reality. But it’s the opportunity of overnight success that keeps people coming from all over the country to tryto make it big, and Hollywood is still the place where that can happen.

‘The Flash’ Is Starting Over From Scratch

Say what you will about Marvel, but they have a well-oiled blockbuster machine. Kevin Feige has perfected their process of bringing together all kinds of talent — actors, directors, writers — and getting them on the same page for each movie. Sure, some have been irked here and there by the process where individual creative choices tend to be muted for the greater good of a four-quadrant movie (see Alan Taylor and “Thor: The Dark World,” for example), but by this p0int, everyone knows what they’re in for when signing up for a Marvel project.

Drake Doremus’ ‘Newness’ Starring Nicholas Hoult Puts A Fresh Spin On Familiar Relationship Problems [Sundance Review]

The early scenes of the contemporary romance “Newness” make it seem like the movie is going to be a frank critique of dating in the iPhone age, when apps make it easier to find a mate — at least for the night —but also make it easier to ignore them once the sex is over. Director Drake Doremus and his frequent writer/producer partner Ben York Jones open “Newness” with a frenzied montage of swiping and screwing, facilitated by a dating app called Winx.

Park City —Danny Strong is a two-time Emmy-winning screenwriter who wrote “Game Change,” “Recount” and “Lee DanielsThe Butler.” He also co-created a little series you might have heard of called “Empire.” Tackling the life of one of America’s greatest literary voices might have been a bit much for his directorial debut. Asghar Farhadi’s ‘The Salesman’ Is Compelling, But Falls Just Short Of Greatness [Review]

There is nogreater chronicler of the minute but manifold disappointments and disillusionments of which irreparable rifts in relationships are made than Iranian director Asghar Farhadi. His last four films — “Fireworks Wednesday,” “About Elly,” “A Separation” and “The Past” — have all examined compromised coupledom in some way. And all have provenFarhadi’s astonishing capacity to trace the ramifications of the incredibly ordinary — an unanswered door, a well-meaning white lie, a forgotten phone — as they unspool with tick-tock clockwork logic toward extraordinaryclimaxes, that feelboth inevitable and unexpected.

Richard Kelly Says He’s Planning Another ‘Donnie Darko’ Movie

The story of director Richard Kelly is one of breakout talent, high expectations, a colossal crash and a fading away from the spotlight. Sixteen years ago this month, the filmmaker became the toast of Sundance with “Donnie Darko,” and by the end of 2001,Hollywood was his oyster. Kelly used his cachet to make “Southland Tales,” a sprawling, star-studded misfire that went into the Cannes Film Festival for its big premiere and never recovered from the reviews.

First Trailer For ‘Spotlight’ Director Tom McCarthy’s Netflix Ya Drama ’13 Reasons Why’ Unravels A Mystery

The movie world was probably at the feet of Tom McCarthy after “Spotlight” was the surprise winner for Best Picture at the Oscars last year, which also landed the filmmaker a statue on his shelf for Best Adapted Screenplay. But instead of leaping to another prestige project, or trying his hand at blockbuster fare, McCarthy took the unexpected routeof going to Netflix, teaming with Selena Gomez (yes, really) and co-producing and directing the Ya drama “13 Reasons Why.” Generally, the phrase “Ya drama” would be cause for pause, but McCarthy’s involvement and the compelling teaser have us intrigued.

We’re a week into the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, and, like American democracy, things are starting to wind down. Most of the major movies have premiered, critics have their favorites (and least favorites), and many of the hot-ticket movies have already been snapped up by distributors, with the box-office success of “Manchester By The Sea” fueling a healthy market for sellers. To those who claimed that Donald Trump would become presidential once he sat behind the desk in the Oval Office…we’re still waiting. So far, Trump has used his time in the White House to start endangering the health of women both at home and abroad, order his Press Secretary to lie about the attendance at the inauguration, start silencing various government departments online, and in general show that the most powerful leader in the world in the world has an even morefragile ego than was previously thought possible.
