Nicolas Winding Refn Directing 'The Equalizer'? Count Me In

16 hours ago | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

If you‘re a regular reader of Get the Big Picture, then you know that we love us some Drive around here.  With good reason, the movie was so unique, dark, violent, quietly optimistic and just and overall well executed movie.  Most of the praise for Drive goes to its director Nicolas Winding Refn.  Refn has another movie coming soon called Only God Forgives, but as we wait with giddy anticipation for that movie, he may have his next movie lined up:  The Equalizer starring Denzel Washington…sweet. »

Nicolas Winding Refn in talks to join Denzel Washington on The Equalizer

16 hours ago | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Sony Pictures and Escape Artists may have found a director to bring their feature adaptation of the 1980s television series The Equalizer to the screen, with Variety reporting that an offer has been made to Nicolas Winding Refn, the acclaimed Danish filmmaker behind the likes of Pusher, Bronson and Drive, and negotiations are expected to commence shortly.

The Equalizer is based on the classic TV series headlined by the late Edward Woodward, who starred as Robert McCall, a former black ops agent from an unnamed government intelligence agency attempting to atone for his past by offering his particular skill set free of charge to those in need. The script for the film has been written by Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2), who is currently tackling the screenplay for the live-action Masters of the Universe remake, while Denzel Washington (Safe House) is attached to star in what is being eyed as a potential franchise. »

‘Drive’ Director Nicolas Winding Refn Eyes ‘The Equalizer’ with Denzel Washington

19 hours ago | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

We’ve been expecting to hear that director Nicolas Winding Renf has dropped the Logan’s Run remake, ever since his Drive leading man Ryan Gosling officially stepped away. There’s not yet been a concrete update on whether Refn has indeed left the sci-fi project; however, it might be safe to assume as much, given that he’s now in talks to direct The Equalizer starring Denzel Washington.

Sony heads are reported to be quite pleased with the most recent Equalizer script draft penned by Richard Wenk (co-writer of The Mechanic and Expendables 2). Hence, the studio has fast-tracked the project for a Spring 2014 release date – meaning this is going to be the next film Refn makes, following the release of Only God Forgives (which reunites him with Gosling).

Equalizer is based (or, ...

Sony continues to reboot its back catalogue of hit feature films and TV series, with Columbia Pictures setting  April 11, 2014  for an update of the 1980's CBS TV series, "The Equalizer", starring Denzel Washington as 'Robert McCall', a former secret agent turned vigilante for hire.

Director Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive") is reportedly in talks with Escape Artists partners Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch. Washington previously starred in Escape Artists' "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" , as well as starring and directing "Antwone Fisher" for producer Black.

"The Equalizer", created by Michael Sloan, aired on CBS  1985 -1989, starring Brit actor Edward Woodward as McCall, mixing elements from popular spy films.

McCall tries to make up for his 'past sins', by offering, free of charge, his services as a troubleshooter vigilante. People could find him through a newspaper ad that read "Got a problem? Odds against you? »

Well, Drive fans, Sony and Escape Artists have found their director for a big-screen adaptation of the 1980s TV show The Equalizer starring Denzel Washington.

After months of trying to settle on a name, Drive and Bronson helmer Nicolas Winding Refn is now directing his first big budget studio picture.

Well, to be honest, Refn has only received an offer, with negotiations expected to start shortly, assuming the project will go into production in late spring of 2013. The Equalizer is scheduled for an April 11th, 2014 release.

Washington stars as Robert McCall, a vet covert operative who, seeking redemption for his dark deeds, quits a CIA-like agency and people in need find him through a newspaper ad:

Got a problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer.

The original series was created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim and starred Edward Woodward, but this time Richard Wenk penned the script.

"Drive" Helmer Tackles "The Equalizer"

7 December 2012 9:59 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

"Drive" helmer Nicolas Winding Refn has signed on to direct the $50 million big screen reboot of "The Equalizer" franchise at Sony Pictures.

Edward Woodward starred in the classic CBS television series about Robert McCall, a former operative of a covert intelligence organisation who seeks redemption for his dark past via offering his services to those being persecuted and in need of help.

The film keeps the basic premise, but then goes off on its own tangent with Denzel Washington attached to play a "solitary, monastic figure who hates injustice and devotes himself to helping people who are being victimized."

Richard Wenk ("The Expendables 2") penned the latest draft of the script and shooting kicks off in the Spring.

Speaking of Refn, a release date has finally been set for his recently completed Thai boxing film "Only God Forgives." It is scheduled to open May 23rd.

It looks like Nicolas Winding Refn is directing The Equalizer

The short-list of possible filmmakers for The Equalizer has been winnowed down to Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn, who will likely apply his zeal for brooding loners and '80s fetishism to making the coolest, most critic-baiting movie adaptation of an old TV show ever. As previously reported, the big-screen update of the Edward Woodward-starring series suddenly began moving quickly once Denzel Washington signed on to the title role, spurring interest from numerous directors who jumped at the chance to make a movie where Denzel Washington plays some kind of cop or agent or something, lest they never see its like »

Drive Director Nicolas Winding Refn Selected For The Equalizer, Starring Denzel Washington

7 December 2012 2:08 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

In July it was confirmed that Denzel Washington had been set to star in The Equalizer, an adaptation of the action/crime television series from the mid-to-late 1980s that starred Edward Woodward as a retired intelligence agent cum private detective who worked to help his clients "equalize" threatening situations. At the time it was said that Richard Wenk, writer of 16 Blocks, The Mechanic and The Expendables 2, had been hired to handle scripting duties, but there was no news about a prospective helmer. Today it seems they have found their man - and it's an absolutely brilliant choice. Deadline reports that Nicolas Winding Refn, the Danish filmmaker who is best known for making Bronson and Drive, has been chosen to direct The Equalizer and will begin negotiations with Sony Pictures and Escape Artists for the job. Described as a being only "loosely based" on the original series, the studio is »

Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn has signed to direct Denzel Washington in The Equalizer, an action film loosely based on the eighties TV series of the same name. The film, which will begin shooting next spring, will center around Washington's character, a former government spy who now uses his powers to help the downtrodden. Either way, hope he likes surprisingly graphic violence and not talking that much. »

From The, 'Huh? Really?' File: Nicolas Winding Refn In Negotiations For The Equalizer

Clearly Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn has been keeping a clone of himself stashed in the closet. It's the only way to explain his manic work schedule. Currently wrapping up bits and bobs on his post-Drive effort Only God Forgives, Refn is already attached to a long gestating reboot of Logan's Run, sex thriller I Walk With The Dead, a television reboot of Barbarella, and a pair of untitled projects - one a thriller, one a comedy - as a director. Plus he's involved in a few more - a remake of Maniac Cop, for one - as a producer. You'd think his schedule would be full. Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) is negotiating a deal to direct The Equalizer for Sony Pictures Entertainment and Escape Artists.

The film, which has been in various stages of development since June 2010 and boasts a script by screenwriter Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2), is loosely based on the short-lived CBS TV series of the same name.

Denzel Washington (American Gangster), who came aboard the film after Russell Crowe (Gladiator) departed late last year and can be seen next in Robert ZemeckisFlight, will play a solitary figure who hates injustice and devotes himself to helping people who are being victimised.

Assuming all the elements come together, production on The Equalizer will start in the early months of next year.

Drive Director to Direct Denzel Washington in The Equalizer

Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn is set to direct Denzel Washington in the big screen adaptation of the TV series The Equalizer for Sony Pictures. Before Refn came on board the project passed through the hands of Paul Haggis and Russell Crowe

I never really had interest in the project, but the fact that Refn is going to direct it has sparked it. The guy is just such a talented director, I loved what he did with Drive, and his upcoming film Only God Forgives looks like it could be even better. If anyone can turn The Equalizer into a badass film worth watching it's Refn, which is probably why they hired him.

Washington plays Robert McCall, a former spy turned private detective. Here's a brief synopsis of the show to give you an idea of what we might expect:

Though he’s putting the finishing touches on Only God Forgives, his follow up to the critically acclaimed Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn already has his eye on his next project. According to THR, the Danish director will be helming Sony’s remake of The Equalizer, based on the 1980s TV series. For those who haven’t been keeping up on the project, Denzel Washington is set to star as a man who works as a “freelance “fixer” in order to make up for his dark past.”

The Equalizer has seen a lot of talent come and go, with directors like Pierre Morel, Gareth Evans and Gavin O’Connor all attached at one point. In fact, when the project first came about, Paul Haggis and Russel Crowe were set to take it on. Nicolas Winding Refn Teams With Denzel Washington For 'The Equalizer,' 'Only God Forgives' Hits May 23rd

We can't quite say we saw this coming. As Nicolas Winding Refn puts the finishing touches to his "Drive" follow-up, "Only God Forgives," many had assumed that he would move on to his "Logan's Run" remake with Bff Ryan Gosling. But the actor recently departed the project, and one perhaps suspects that Refn's lost his taste for the film as a result, as word's been very quiet on it late. But it looks like the director's next film will be a studio movie after all, rather than "I Walk With The Dead" with Carey Mulligan. But it won't be "The Button Man," a thriller set up at DreamWorks, and it won't be "Logan's Run." Instead, Refn's teaming up with a major A-lister, taking the helm on Sony's remake of 1980s TV series "The Equalizer," which will star Denzel Washington. Back in the summer, he was one of a number of »

Congratulations, Sony. You now have my attention for this adaptation of the 80s TV series The Equalizer. The project sounded like it might have a chance to be cool with Denzel Washington taking the lead role just over a year ago. But now Variety reports Drive and Bronson director Nicolas Winding Refn currently has an offer to direct the film, and negotiations for a deal should begin soon. Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2) is behind the script, and apparently a lot of directors, including Gavin O' Connor (Warrior) and Pierre Morel (Taken) were after the job. But Washington gave his seal of approval for Refn to direct. For those who aren't familiar with the series, The Equalizer followed Robert McCall, an agent with a mysterious past who once worked for a top-secret agency where he did some pretty horrible things. The gritty and violent series follows his exploits as he »

This is Hot, if you don't mind me saying so! Those who've seen his last film, last year's criticaly-acclaimed thriller Drive, should know why this is a good look for the project, and for its star, Denzel Washington. Director Nicolas Winding Refn has been tapped to direct Denzel Washington in its big screen adaptationg of the 1980s TV show, The Equalizer for Sony Pictures and Escape Artists, from a script written by Richard Wenk. First announced over a year ago, when Russell Crowe was said to be attached to star, Denzel replaced him in the film earlier this year.
