‘The Circle’: James Ponsoldt Explains Why His Dave Eggers Adaptation Isn’t Just Another Film About Dangers of Technology

There’s one thing filmmaker James Ponsoldt just can’t seem to get away from: obsession. With films like “Smashed,” “The Spectacular Now” and “The End of the Tour” under his belt, Ponsoldt has a knack for humanizing characters with seemingly outsized needs, from addicts to recluses.

It’s that kind of obsession that also drives Ponsoldt’s next film, “The Circle.”Ponsoldt (who has always been a big believer in the power of the cinematic adaptation)has adapted Dave Eggers’ 2013 novel of the same name, which follows May (Emma Watson), a young woman who is hired by a powerful internet company (think Facebook, but bigger)and slowly falls down the rabbit hole of its many dark conspiracies and major secrets.

Pakistan Is Still Banning Indian Cinema, and All Movie Lovers Should Be Concerned About It

At the end of January, Pakistan lifted a ban placed in 2016 on the import of Indian films into the country. In a step welcomed by supporters of cinema, cultural exchange, and freedom of expression on both sides of the border, the Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif sanctioned the move on January 26, which is India’s Republic Day.

However, as with most things involving the neighboring countries, there have been some complications with the deal — and there is no long-term happy ending in sight. On Monday, February 6, the second Bollywood film scheduled to be released in Pakistan following this rollback — superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s crime drama “Raees” — has been banned in the country, due to its supposedly negative portrayal of Muslims.

The move reignites a level of censorship that had seemed to be a part of history only days earlier. As a major example of creative freedom hitting a wall, »

‘Fifty Shades Darker’ Review: Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan Loosen Up For Sexier, Sillier Sequel

Don’t let that title fool you: The second entry in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” cinematic trilogy is by no means a darker outing than its predecessor, and the franchise (already set to wrap up with a third feature in 2018) is all the better for it. Whipping up aproper tone for the big screen versionsof E.L. James’ wildly popular novels was always going to be the films’ biggest problem, and while director James Foley might not quitenail it, wily injections of humor prove to be an unexpectedly helpful addition to the kinky franchise.

Picking up mere days after the events of Sam Taylor-Johnson’s 2015 “Fifty Shades of Grey,” Foley’s film quickly shifts gears away from the doom and gloom of the first film to give audiences something sexier, sillier and a fair bit soapier. After gliding through a series of literally tattered childhood memories that »

It’s ‘The Lego Batman Movie’ and ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’ to the Box Office Rescue! But Is That Enough?

The Lego Batman Movie” (Warner Bros.), “Fifty Shades Darker” (Universal), and “John Wick: Chapter 2” (Lionsgate) present the strongest week of openers so far in 2017. Combined, they could gross over $125 million. That would be great news not only because we need a strong weekend, but also because these new filmsrepresentwhat’s on deck for the rest of the year.

Whatever happens, this weekend isn’t the same as this time last year, when it was President’s Day weekend and Valentine’s Day on Sunday. That boosted the Top Ten to $216 million, led by“Deadpool” and its unexpected $132 million total. (Two other openers, “How to Be Single” and “Zoolander 2,” opened to under $20 million each).

Natalie Portman’s ‘Jackie’ Accent May Sound Strange, But History Backs It Up

In her Oscar-nominated performance as Jackie Kennedy in “Jackie,” Natalie Portman has received the bulk of the film’s praise (rightfully so) for her in-depth portrayal of a public figure so mysterious to the general public. Still, one of the most notable aspects of her character — and amajor factor inher performance — is the all-important Jackie Kennedy accent.

In an aptly exhaustive examination of the actor’s approach,Alex Abad-Santos over at Vox breaks down the historical significance of Jackie’s accent with the help ofseveral linguistic experts. Not quite transatlantic and not quite New York, Kennedy’s accent was a product of her wealthy upbringing along with a childhood split between Southampton and Long Island. The driving force of her accent, though, came from her years in school in Manhattan. At this time, well-to-do students, much like Kennedy herself, were taught a mixture of American English with »
