Ford based marque originally devised to appeal to American middle classes, but this was mostly lost on any prospective UK buyer. Like the Ford cars (and most other American brands) sales were limited up until imports ceased in the late 70’s. The European built Capri was also sold as a Mercury for a period but it’s the Cougar that is most notable and therefore most common Mercury in the UK.
