Datengrundlagen zur Einordnung und Bewertung hydrologischer Extreme
Für einen überregionalen Blick auf die großen Ströme Elbe, Oder, Rhein, Weser und Donau (in Bearbeitung) präsentiert die Informationsplattform „Undine“ kompakte Beschreibungen historischer hydrologischer Extremereignisse (Hochwasser, Niedrigwasser), aktuelle Messwerte sowie historische Vergleichswerte und verweist auf vielfältige Informationsquellen. Ein Schwerpunkt der Betrachtung liegt auf der Darstellung der Gewässerbeschaffenheit bei Extremereignissen.
Informationen aus den Bereichen
Hydrometeorologie, quantitativer und qualitativer Gewässerkunde werden miteinander verknüpft und überregional einheitlich dargestellt. Durch den Vergleich mit historischen Ereignissen bzw. langjährigen Kennwerten können aktuelle Hochwasser- oder Niedrigwasserereignisse besser eingeordnet und bewertet werden.

Eine Undine [lat. unda = "Welle"] ist in der Mythologie ein weiblicher jungfräulicher Wassergeist (auch Nixe, Seejungfrau). Mit dem romantischen Märchen Undine hat ihr Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué (1811) ein literarisches Denkmal gesetzt. E.T.A Hoffmann, A. Lortzing, A. Dvořák, J. Giraudoux sowie H.W. Henze brachten den Undinenmythos auf die Opern- bzw. Theaterbühne.
In der zeitgenössischen Literatur läßt sich I. Bachmann mit der Novelle "Undine geht" von der Undinenfigur inspirieren. Als Verbindung zwischen Wasserwelt und Menschenwelt ist Undine Namenspatin dieser Informationsplattform zu hydrologischen Extremereignissen.
