After loosing the Gordon Bennett Race in France in 1900 with his Winter Racer and a race in Grosse Pointe to Henry Ford in 1902 Alexander Winton built the Winton Bullet (Bullet No.1) in early 1903. The Bullet was a more powerful race car with a four cylinder vertical engine that had over 50 horsepower.

This American Automobile was twice as fast has any of the previous "Winton Racers" and three times more powerful. It was clocked at 60 MPH at the Glenville track and 70 miles per hour on newly paved Clifton Boulevard in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1903 at Ormond Beach, Winton in his four cylinder Bullet racer beat Ransom E. Olds in his racer called "The Pirate" by only 2/10th of a second. It was at this Ormond Challenge Cup on Ormond Beach, north of Daytona Beach, that the American Automobile caught the attention of the motoring public. Ormond Beach is now called the "Birth Place Of Speed" thanks to Alexander Winton, Barney Oldfield, Ransom E. Olds and the Stanley Brothers.

This photograph (above) shows the 1902 Winton Bullet, manufactured by Alexander Winton of Cleveland, Ohio. The automobile was equipped with a four cylinder vertical 57 horsepower engine, wheelbase was 136 inches. It was officially timed at a speed of 55.38 miles per hour in 1903.

See Alexander Winton's Bullet No.1 above and Bullet No.2 below. The Winton Bullet No.1 had a four cylinder vertical engine while the Bullet No.2 had a straight eight cylinder horizontal engine. Winton Bullet No.1 originated the unorthodox flatboat body. However the Winton Bullet No.2 took it to a new level because of the horizontal engine.
