The early Winton's like the one shown below at the Winton factory cost $1000.00 to $1200.00 new and was equipped with a gasoline one cylinder 9 horsepower engine and was started by a side crank. Steering was done by tiller or a handle connected to front wheels. Winton used a stock car like this one in a second road race from Cleveland to New York City in 1899. This automobile was equipped with a single cylinder 8 horsepower engine.
1899 Winton Two Passenger Phaeton or Roadster By 1900 Winton was the third largest American Automobile maker behind Locomobile and Columbia. Winton was also a leader in American automotive racing. A road race organized by James Gordon Bennett of the New York Herald was held in France over a 352 mile course that started in Paris. Winton entered the event with the first American Automobile to compete in a European event. This automobile is shown below and was well known as "The Winton Racer". "The Winton Racer" was unable to keep up with the M. Carron 16 horsepower French Panhard. The outcome of the road race held in France was a disappointment due to tire problems. Alexander Winton did not complete the Gordon Bennett Cup Road Race.
1900 Winton Racer A new "Winton Racer" was build in 1900 (an advanced 1901 model) and Alexander Winton drove from Cleveland, OH to New York City once again. This run he made in 38 hours and 30 minutes. Alexander Winton timed this run to coincide with the 1900 Automobile show at Madison Square Garden. When the mud spattered Winton Racer arrived at the 1900-01 New York Automobile show it was at once put on display.
1901 Winton Racer The 1901 Winton Racer was equipped with a single cylinder horizontal engine with 9 horsepower and weight 2,000 pounds. Note the dark hole on the side of this Winton Racer between the wheels. A hand crank was inserted there to start the engine. The masked man at the wheel of the 1901 Winton Racer below is Alexander Winton. This image is from the Chicago Interocean Meet in September 1900. Winton won a number of races in 1901 and was celebrated as the national track champion of America.
1901 Winton Racer In 1902 Winton presented his first two cylinder car to the American motoring public. From it resulted the Bullet I a four cylinder with 40 horsepower. In 1903 Winton built the eight cylinder Bullet II and a lighter 4 cylinder Bullet III, just for racing. These three American Automobiles became the new "Winton Racers".
