Vermont provided over 32,000 men to the Union Army in the Civil War. It was represented at the Battle of Gettysburg by over 4,400 men in nine infantry and one cavalry regiments, of whom 415 became casualties. (see the States at Gettysburg) Vermont was unusual in having two all-Vermont brigades at Gettysburg, as well as a cavalry regiment and three companies of sharpshooters.
