Star Wars novels

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, an edict came down from on high: every Star Wars-related product that the company produced moving forward would be canonical, from coloring books to video games to comics and beyond. We already saw how some of the books influenced the script for The Force Awakens, but now we know how a whole new set of Star Wars novels will connect to the events of Rian Johnson‘s upcoming movie Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters Crossover Sequel

Though everyone is excited about all the panels for blockbuster movies and sci-fi and fantasy TV shows at San Diego Comic-Con, there’s plenty more that happens at the massive pop culture convention, and we took the time to cover a much smaller panel that deserves your attention as well.

IDW Publishing hosted a panel for their Ghostbusters 101 comic book (which I talked about in The Water Cooler recently), and with it came some interesting announcements about the future of Ghostbusters not only on the page, but on toy shelves as well. Along with a crossover sequel reuniting the Ghostbusters with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, there is a new line of Playmates figures featuring the Ghostbusters as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…or maybe vice versa.

War for the Planet of the Apes beach ceasar on horseback

There’s a two-year gap between the events of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes. At the beginning of Matt Reeves‘ sequel, Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his followers have grown stronger from the virus. War also starts with a full-on war raging between apes and the humans, which a prequel novel, in addition to some comic books, will fill in a few blanks for. Below, learn more about the War for the Planet of the Apes prequel hitting shelves tomorrow.

marvel on comixology unlimited

It’s been almost a year since Comixology announced they would be offering an all-you-can-eat Netflix-style option for their comic books subscription service. We wrote about it last May, and I have been a paying member of the service since then. The biggest notable exclusion from the service was Marvel comics, who offer their own subscription service, Marvel Unlimited.

But today, it was announced that Marvel Comics is finally joining the Comixology Unlimited fold.

Kong Skull Island Comic Book

This week brings the release of Skull Island: The Birth of Kong, a prequel comic that keys us into some of the events that happened before last month’s Kong: Skull Island. Since the new movie focusing on the giant ape just throws us into the mythic world of the island filled with monsters with little to no backstory, of course there’s a prequel story to be told that lets us know how Kong became king.

We live in a world where comic books have their trailers now, and the Kong Skull Island comic book trailer reveals some of the artwork that we’ll find in the pages of the comic that expands the mythology of what is being called Warner Bros.’ MonsterVerse. Watch the trailer below to see what’s in store. Read More »

Darth Vader Comic Book

Written by Frank Miller, illustrated by David Mazzucchelli and colored by Richmond Lewis, the comic book Batman: Year One follows the early crime-fighting career of The Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan’s film Batman Begins borrowed elements from that comic to tell the origin of Batman, and now Darth Vader will get a similar treatment in comic book form thanks to a new Marvel Comics series.

Writer Charles Soule and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli are working on a new ongoing Marvel Comics series that will follow Darth Vader. Marvel already published a comic series that followed Darth Vader during the time between Star Wars: A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, but this second series feels like it could be titled Darth Vader: Year One, providing insight into how Anakin Skywalker began to evolve into more machine than man after Revenge of the Sith.
