During the Television Critics Association panel for Star Trek: Discovery, producers played the show’s opening title song by Jeff Russo for the first time. The theme song runs a full minute and a half, and they intend it to play on every episode of the CBS All Access streaming service.

Bryan Fuller met the Television Critics Association last summer to talk about his plans for Star Trek: Discovery, but then left the show to focus on his Starz series American Gods. Today, CBS All Access presented a full panel with Discovery’s cast and producers, which revealed two significant elements that remain from Fuller.

Star Trek: Discovery might have truly and boldly gone beyond what any Star Trek series had done before, if original showrunner Bryan Fuller were still at the helm.
Fuller, a passionate Trekkie who was long attached to the project before he left to devote all of his attention to American Gods, revealed that he had originally pitched Star Trek: Discovery to CBS as an anthology series. However, his high-concept vision for the series was thrown out by the network, and several other clashes led to Fuller’s eventual ouster.

Members of the /Film staff spent much of the past week in San Diego to cover Comic-Con 2017, the enormous convention that explores every single corner of the geek world (and surely you’ve heard of it and already knew that). We saw footage from Marvel’s upcoming movies, including Avengers: Infinity War. We were able to listen to Steven Spielberg talk about Ready Player One. We explored the world of Blade Runner 2049 in a special VR experience. We watched 7,000 people go totally nuts over the first trailer for Stranger Things season 2.

Comic-Con is the epicenter of all things geeky, so of course the new Star Trek: Discovery trailer premiered there. The new series, which is set to arrive on CBS later this year, looks to invigorate Star Trek for the small screen by looking to the past – the show is set a decade before the adventures of James T. Kirk and promises to cast light on a time period in the series’ sprawling timeline that has yet to be properly explored on screen.
But you don’t have to be at the series’ panel, or even at Comic-COn, to watch the new trailer. It’s online right now and you can watch it below.

Star Trek is coming back to television in a big way this fall with an all new series coming to CBS All Access. Since San Diego Comic-Con is full of the kind of nerds who are looking forward to exploring the final frontier, it should come as no surprise that Star Trek: Discovery has a big presence at Comic-Con.
Not only is there a panel here at the convention, but CBS All Access also put together a little Star Trek: Discovery exhibition full of props, costumes and artwork of the new ships that fans will see when the new series begins this fall. You probably know Doug Jones as the man who played Abe Sapien in Hellboy, the Faun and the Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth, and the Silver Surfer in 2007’s otherwise-forgettable Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. But very soon, you might know him best as Lieutenant Saru, a character on the upcoming CBS All Access drama Star Trek: Discovery.
In the show’s first trailer, we saw that Jones’ alien character was “biologically determined for one purpose alone: to sense the coming of death.” Aside from that, we didn’t know much about him. Star Trek: Discovery is the first Star Trek TV show to air in 12 years. With that, come plenty of expectations: a diverse crew, a noble captain and lead character, and a show that boldly explores different planets and story lines.
But Star Trek: Discovery is changing things up. Not only is it airing on the streaming platform CBS All Access, it will feature a lead character played by Sonequa Martin-Green who is not the highest-ranking officer. Showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg recently revealed the details of how Martin-Green’s story will progress and how it will impact the show.
