Around 2,200 Hoosiers fought at the Battle of Gettysburg in five infantry and parts of of two cavalry regiments. Around 550 Indiana men – 27% – became casualties during the battle (see the States at Gettysburg). Indiana sent over 125,000 men to the Union Army in the Civil War, but most served in the Western Theater.
Each Indiana unit on the field is honored by its own monument, as well as a monument near Spangler’s Spring to all men from the State of Indiana who fought at Gettysburg.
