Regulatory Oversight in China

Although safety concerns have accompanied the development of nuclear power for commercial use since it began over 60 years ago, the nuclear energy industry's safety record compares well against other forms of energy production.

In their effort to maintain continuous safety improvement for nuclear power stations, different collaboration and knowledge-management frameworks are being formulated within the international nuclear community with the ultimate goal of promoting peaceful nuclear technologies and reinforcing nuclear safety. Major organisations promoting nuclear safety and radiation protection, as well as key nuclear trade organisations, include:

Promotion of Nuclear Safety

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is established to promote the peaceful use of the atom. It serves as the world’s centre for scientific and technical cooperation in the nuclear field
The establishment of The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) unites commercial nuclear power plant operators to achieve the highest possible standards of nuclear safety
The Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) is to promote the highest levels of safety and reliability – to promote excellence – in the operation of commercial nuclear power plants in the United States

Promotion of Radiation Protection

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) is an international organisation to help prevent cancer and other diseases and effects associated with exposure to ionising radiation
The United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) is responsible for assessing global levels and effects of ionising radiation and to provide scientific basis for radiation protection

Trade and Industry Associations

The World Nuclear Association (WNA) fosters interaction among top industry leaders to help shape the future of nuclear power
Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) is the policy organisation of the US nuclear energy and technologies industry and participates in both the national and global policy-making process.
The China Nuclear Energy Association (CNEA) acts as a platform for its members to link with the government and the foreign counterparts as well as to promote innovation and technology development in the nuclear industry
