Specialty operation theater in government's Gandhi revamp chart

HYDERABAD: The state government has chalked outplans for massive up-gradation of the state-run Gandhi Hospital, including a facelift of the entrance area. While the state health department has been upgrading government hospitals with better infrastructure and amenities, majority of the hospitals are not equipped to conduct specialty surgeries like transplantations and implants, say sources.
Now, in a bid to equip Gandhi Hospital, a new integrated operation theatre complex will be developed at the hospital. The Gandhi hospital currently has about 30 operation theatres but the facilities are not adequate for specialty surgeries. About 6-8 modular operation theatres have been planned.
"OTs will have specialised air-conditioning to filter out bacteria to avoid infections in specialised surgeries," said a senior official from the state health department. The Osmania General Hospital (OGH) and Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) will be assisting the Gandhi Hospital in upgrading facilities.
The absence of proper facilities are blamed for no contributions to Jeevandan scheme (organ donations) from the hospital, said insiders. As per official documents, of the three key government hospitals in the city, Gandhi Hospital has made no contribution to organ donations.
Through the years NIMS recorded 13, OGH 7 and Gandhi Hospital has recorded no donors, while privately run hospitals have as high as 80 and 64 donations. Minister for health, C Laxma Reddy, held review meetings to plan the up-gradation. The operation theatres will also be used to perform knee and brain implant surgeries which are currently conducted at privately run hospitals.
