HYDERABAD: The World Telugu Conference returns to Hyderabad after a gap of 42 years. And the Telangana government plans to utilise the opportunity to showcase the nascent state projecting Telangana as the birth place of Telugu. Incidentally, this is the biggest event in Hyderabad, in terms of the number of delegates, since the formation of Telangana state in June 2014.
Historians are divided over the birth place of Telugu. While some argue that it was born in the coastal region of Andhra Pradesh, others believe that Telugu had its birth on Telangana soil. Amidst this background, the Telangana government has armed itself with archaeological and epigraphical evidences to prove its contention that Telangana indeed is the birth place of Telugu. The carefully selected slogan, " Mana Telanganam - Telugu Maaganam" , aptly supports the contention of the government that "Telugu is the voice of our Telangana".
The six-day mega event will witness a series of literary and cultural activities with an emphasis on the origin and development of the language. Eminent linguists and expert epigraphists in Telugu from a number of universities abroad including Wisconsin University and George Mason University will participate. As many as 8000 delegates from around the world will attend the event.
Welcome arches commemorating as many as 83 Telugu personalities including politicians, poets, authors, writers, linguists and researchers will be set up all over the state.
The city is being spruced up. Arches and banners at the main venue - LB stadium - will reflect the Telugu culture, traditions, customs and history. Every small and big evidence on the origin of Telugu is being collected and they will be showcased at the conference. Coins, replicas of stone inscriptions and palm leaf manuscripts with Telugu script will be on display.
