Henry Ford’s son Edsel created Mercury in 1938 to be the middle brand between mass market Ford and the luxury Lincoln brand. By the 1960s, Mercury models were restyled Ford models, and 1978 was the brand’s top sales year. The Cougar was a variation of Ford’s Mustang. Ford’s Taurus became the Mercury Sable. Before Ford Motor Co. discontinued the brand in 2010, the Mercury Milan and the Grand Marquis were top sellers.
