World War Relics

Moreton Island was one of Australia's major coastal defence bases during the world wars. The remains of military buildings, gun placements and forts can still be
seen on the island. In World War I, Cowan Cowan Point provided the main defence base. World War II saw two large defence battery complexes built, one at Cowan Cowan and the second on the east side of the island the Rous Battery.

During this war, the Rous Battery track, Middle Road, and a naval base and jetty were built at Tangalooma. The remains of the batteries are still present and contain items of historic interest. Their purpose was to protect the approaches to the port of Brisbane and at its peak 900 troops were stationed on the island.

In front of Bulwer just to the north of the wrecks 20 metres behind the beach foredunes, is a World War II concrete bunker. This was a control hut
for a mine field that lay between Moreton and Bribie Islands in
WWII. Another bunker, a generator hut, lies on The Strand road further in and about 100m North.
