Camping

There's nothing like the taste of fire roasted marshmallows for you and your family to enjoy, so unpack your camping gear build a campfire and enjoy your natural surroundings. Moreton Island provides a variety of coastal camping experiences, some accessible by four-wheel-drive, others accessible by boat or close to barge landing points. All campgrounds and camping zones within the national park and recreation area require a camping permit which must be obtained before you arrive on the island. You can book your camping permit on the Queensland National Parks Website or over the phone on 13 74 68.

Moreton Island National Park Campgrounds and Facilities

There are 5 National Park Campgrounds around the Island, with facilities (toilets, showers), and numerous established bush campsites (no facilities, provide your own essentials).

The Wrecks Campground

The Wrecks is a walk-in camping area just a short stroll from Tangalooma near the main barge landing point a sheltered deep bay. There are 21 sites available; the surface is sand and is surrounded by native shrubs and trees. Vehicles can park on the beach a short distance from the campground.

Ben-ewa Campground

Shady, protected sites with water, toilets and showers (cold )
A favourite with families and school groups because of the sheltered bay waters, Ben-Ewa’s valley location provides protection from strong winds and offers many a shady tree. The site is on the western side of the island, 1.5 km north of The Wrecks. There are only 12 camping plots available, but it is accessible for caravans and camper trailers. Open fires are permitted in existing fire sites. Bring your own firewood and treat the water before drinking.

Comboyuro Point Campground

Within walking distance of the Bulwer township on the island’s west coast, this site has 49 camping plots marked with totems and plenty of shade. This Campsite is popular due to its proximity to facilities in the township of bulwer and its central location to 4wd tracks running to popular Island destinations. This campsite offers sheltered waters. Open fires are allowed, but you must bring your own firewood

North Point Campground

On the northern tip of the island between Yellow Patch and Cape Moreton, a large grassy site close to the surf beach and within walking distance of Honeymoon Bay and the Champagne Pools. There is a maximum of 17 sites available. Treat water before drinking.

Blue Lagoon Campground

With beautiful walking trails to the nearby lake and close proximity to the surf beach this camping area is in a gorgeous spot on the eastern side of the island between Middle Road and Cape Moreton. Trailers and caravans are permitted, but due to the soft sand on the one-way track they are not recommended. The site is also within walking distance of the Blue Lagoon campground. There are a maximum of 25 sites are available. Bring in your own firewood and treat water before drinking.

Beach/Bush Campsites

For a guaranteed rugged adventure choose a beach camping zone. There are 5 beach camping zones on Moreton Island: north-west, north-east, south-west, south-east and Yellow Patch. There are no facilities in these camping zones, so you must bring all essentials including drinking

North West Campsites

Covers beach campsites between Ben-Ewa and Comboyuro Point campgrounds. Sites range from secluded sites to grouped areas all varying in size. Many sites have water views and shade. A maximum of 76 sites are available. This camping zone offers calm bay waters.

North East Campsite

Covers all eastern beach campsites between Middle Road, heading north to Spitfire Creek on the Eastern Beach (Surfside), excluding sites in the campground. Sites range from secluded sites to grouped areas all varying in size. Many sites have water views and shade. There are a maximum of 89 sites are available. This camping zone offers exposed surf beaches.

South West Campsites

Covers all western campsites from Tangalooma Bypass to Toulkerrie near Kooringal and the Sandhills. Sites range from secluded sites to grouped areas all varying in size. This camping zone offers calm bay waters. There are a maximum of 24 sites are available. Some campsites closer to Toulkerrie may only be accessible by 4WD at low tide due to a smaller beach area.

South East Campsites

Covers all eastern beach campsites between Middle Road, heading south to Rous Battery near Camel Rock on the Eastern Beach (Surfside). Sites range from secluded sites to grouped areas all varying in size. Many sites have ocean views and shade. Kooringal is the closest township. There are a maximum of 35 sites are available, This camping zone offers exposed surf beaches.

Yellow Patch Campsites

Covers all western beach campsites in the Yellow Patch area, between North Point and Heath Island. Sites vary in size and range from secluded sites to close, social camping areas. Many sites have sea views and shade. There are a maximum of 14 sites are available. This camping zone offers surf beaches but is not as exposed as the surfside.
North Point campground is a short drive offering toilets and a cold water shower
