Bundaberg Regional Council is upgrading its Interactive
Mapping application.
Why is
the transition happening?
The upgrade and transition is occurring in
order to maintain the best possible compatibility with modern Internet browsers
on PC's and mobile devices. The old
application required a Silverlight plugin for the web browser in order to use
the full functionality of the mapping application. Due to security issues within the Silverlight
plugin, web browser developers have been removing compatibility with the
Silverlight plugin.
The new mapping application viewer uses
HTML5. All modern web browsers on
desktop computers and mobile devices such as tablets and phones support HTML5
without the need to download and install any additional web browser plugins.
The upgrade also introduces a new search
function to include predictive text. When
entering an address or property description in the search box, a prediction of
the result will be shown for the user to be able to select from.
The new version also allows the user to easily
share map locations with other users via email and social media networks such
as Facebook and Twitter.
When will
the transition happen?
The new version will be available and made the
default application from the 12th February 2018. To allow users time to transition to the new
version, the old version will still be accessible until the 23rd
February. After this date the old
version will no longer be accessible.
Is there
anything that I need to do?
For the best user experience, it is recommended
that users ensure they are running the latest version of their preferred
Internet browser.
Users should also note that any "Projects" that
have been saved by using the "Save Project" button as shown below,
will not be able to be opened in the new
version. Any data that users have saved
in a project will need to be exported from the old version and imported into
the new version. Drawing mark-ups that
have been created on the map can be exported from the old version via the "Tasks" menu and the "Extract" option, as shown below.
The "Extract" option will generate a zip file
that will contain a group of files in GIS shape file format. The downloaded zip file will need to be
opened and the GIS shape files extracted.
The files can then be imported into the new version via the "Map" tab with the "Upload Data" option as shown below.
It should be noted that the GIS shape files can
also be imported into most other GIS or Drafting software packages, ie QGIS,
MapInfo, AutoCAD etc.
