What we do

As the largest network of physiologists in Europe, with academic journals of global reach, we continue our 140 year tradition of being at the forefront of the life sciences. Our governing document describes what The Society is and the rules by which we operate.

The Physiological Society is registered in England and Wales as a company limited by guarantee, No. 323575, and a registered charity No. 211585. The registered office is Hodgkin Huxley House, 30 Farringdon Lane, London EC1R 3AW, UK.

Our aims

We support the advancement of physiology by promoting collaboration between physiologists around the world, and research that will contribute to a better understanding of the complex functions of living organisms. Expanding physiological knowledge ultimately contributes to developing disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. We also promote physiology in classrooms through educational initiatives; these facets of our work fall under our larger goal of promoting the discipline of physiology while benefitting the public.  Read more on our charitable objects page; we also recently launched a new five-year strategy.

Public benefit

Our activities benefit the public in a variety of ways. Our publications, meetings, and educational resources directly benefit people actively involved in physiology such as researchers, teachers, and students. This advancement within the discipline of physiology then benefits society as a whole by improving human and animal health. We are also involved in public engagement that demonstrates how physiology relates to everyday life. Read more in our public benefit statement.
