Square Enix has revealed the release dates for both Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age on Nintendo Switch. As it happens, they'll be releasing just weeks apart this April.
Both titles were first announced for Switch back in September last year during a Nintendo Direct - the presentation actually revealed a frankly ridiculous number of Final Fantasy games for the system, including the much-loved Final Fantasy VII.
Of the two games receiving release dates today, it's the X / X-2 remaster which will be launching first on 16th April. Final Fantasy XII is coming just a little bit later on 30th April, and character designer Akihiko Yoshida has shared this beautiful piece of artwork to celebrate.
If you're a fan of the Final Fantasy series, the Switch is about to become a fantastic way to have lots of your favourite games ready to play at a moment's notice.
Are you thinking about diving into these games once more when they arrive on Switch? Is this perhaps the first time you'll be having a go at a Final Fantasy game? Tell us below.

Curious about the pricing for these. I might start collecting them.
I wonder if X-2 will be a digital download like it was for the Vita, or if it'll be included on the cartridge?
Looking forward to play XII again! Easily the best numbered Final Fantasy.
Never played X or X2, getting it on the Switch will be a good time for me to start!
I really enjoyed X as the last true turn-based offering in the franchise, but I probably won't go back to it. I've heard good things about XII. Will need to check it out.
Will both of have a retail release or digital only?
Yaaay...!!
Time to sell my PS4 version of FF X/X-2 HD & FF XII The Zodiac Age.
Never cared for 12, when is VII coming??? GAH!
Might be tempted to get X if it is physical, but i doubt any of these will be.
@RazumikhinPG
Both of them will be in Physical as well.
I don’t need a Direct now! This is the announcement I was most excited about!
why not ff7 first???
X/X-2 was the first PS4 game I bought, ironic I know. XII I just can’t really get into.
I guess they decided to forgo the Direct and just start posting release dates on social media. That's not as exciting.
Hmmm... XBox One X version with 4K & (maybe) 60fps ?
Or Switch version ?
A hell of dilemna, again.
Both day one. Along with Dragons Dogma this is going to be an expensive month, but it will keep me going until the big hitters at the end of this year. Probably looking at you Metroid.
@thesilverbrick $50
So happy to have Final Fantasy games back on a Nintendo system
Are we getting a physical release?
Crazy that these games are actually really being ported to a Nintendo console, never thought I would see it happen. Happy to know that more people will be able to play these gems, Final Fantasy is my favorite series. For newcomers, start with FFX, it's more a classic turn based JRPG and the story is amazing. If you like MMO's then start with XII, the story is not great but the gameplay is fun and addicting.
just need Final Fantasy 7 release date, than i can plan on buying all of the FF games whenever i can. i am planning on getting 1, 2, 3, 4 on PSP, 5, 6, 8 on PC and 7, 9, 10, and 12 on Switch. (in no order and not all at once.)
just started buying Persona 3 FES and 4 this month. and can't wait to try 1, 2, on PSP in the near future.
Hope X2 is in the cart, detest when they split games into half digital download wirh one time code.
Preordering 12 and stamping my calendar, though! Been holding on playing my PS4 copy for this!
Oh also forgot: confirmed, Tidus is the third DLC fighter for Smash!
/s
Gonna double dip on XII and triple dip on X . And play X on Switch day one
Yes I'll be buying all of them no matter what, though I already had multiple versions of FFX, I hope FFX-2 is also on the cartridge and it's nice to have FFXII: The Zodiac Age on there as well.
April 2019 is literally the best month ever. First Avengers Endgame, then Game of thrones season 8, and attack on Titan season 3 and now this too !
YES. Could care less about FFX and FFX2 which are absolute garbage but 12 will be great until the REAL one hits...FF9!!!
@LegendOfStewart
Me too! I've missed out on all of the games after VIII.
@Spectra I've actually been worried that they'll all be digital, I hope I'm wrong.
Yes Yes Yes Yes!!!!! This is awesome!!!!
Please oh please let there be physical releases.
If they're physical, that's three guaranteed purchases this April...
Eh. Just give me the release date for IX and I'll be happy.
(Well... that and finally giving the world a definitive release of FF 6 with a proper translation, unfiltered spritework, and the original music)
@Anti-Matter Do you have a source that says both will be physical?
Love the artwork for XII, but it's missing my favorite character. Basch is the man.
@bluemujika At the very least, FFXII won't be - there has been a physical listing for it on Amazon for quite a while. They're not generally wrong about these things I don't think (there was never a physical listing for WOFF Maxima anyway) so I'd take that as a good sign.
The others, though? I think we'll probably get X/X-2 HD, but VII and IX seem pretty unlikely...
@Panopticon
Check playasia for preorder of FF X/X-2 HD & FF XII the Zodiac Age Switch version.
With all these games getting release dates announced this week a direct in the near future is looking rather unlikely.
Hopefully I'm wrong though!
All of my yes. Like I said before, no plans for the long completed X dilogy (I mean, these games were my main catalysts in buying a Vita three years ago), but I'm really looking forward playing XII at long last!
@Bunkerneath @lemonjellydude I believe FFVII and FFIX are both digital only releases, so straight to eShop. Therefore, I fully expect these to release before X/X2 and XII release in April. It's weird they haven't announced them in the right order... but I'm sure they will release in the right order!
@Onion_Knight that's because Nintendo is doing great with Switch system. Many people are using it and of course they know it. It's all about business. If you have hardware that sells? you will get support and more games will be released
Maybe would be interested in picking up X & X-2, but I'm more interested in release date for IX I've had an itch to replay that one since it's been a long time. I recently replayed XII on PS4 so I'm good on that front at least.
@invictus4000 So you could care less about FFX and FFX-2? Meaning that you do care them. That's nice to know.
Your statement about them being garbage is however false. Whilst you may not appreciate them, they is a large portion of the RPG Gambas that does.
@invictus4000 FFX is actually very good, just that the English voice work are laughably bad and who could blame them it's an early PS2 title so it's expected. FFX-2 was terrible with its story but the gameplay and class changing structure made it worth playing though.
@Anti-Matter PlayAsia also says both are set at $50, and release date is December 2019. These are just placeholders.
@thesilverbrick In Canada Amazon has them for $60 X and X2 in a set and XII as $60 as well. so i would guess about $40 to $50 US so still cheaper than full price and full price in Canada for a game is $80
@retro_player_22 The English voice track is laughably bad? How so?
Already pre-ordered XII, which I've never had the chance to play. Already have X/X-2 (and VII, VIII, and IX) on my Vita, I probably won't bother double-dipping on those unless there's some significant additions.
X is a good game but it badly needed a skip cut scene button. Theres one over five minutes long right before a difficult boss battle. Grrr!
What a shame! I've just completed all available parts on my PS4. Might triple-dip on IX, which is my favourite after the almight VI if the price is right.
Was hoping they’d be released sooner...oh well! Just another reason to be excited for spring!
@Alucard83 yup of course, gotta please the investors and make money. Good to see Square working closely with Nintendo again tho, looking forward to new projects.
I'm super excited for XII. Haven't played it since the game first released on the PS2 ages ago. The gameplay is interesting. It's like proto-Xenoblade Chronicles.
Don't care about X/X-2 one way or the other, but I'm happy for the people who wanted it
Never played 12. Can't wait. Got far in both X and X-2, but never beat either of them.
Am I the only one who has ever referred to Final Fantasy X as "Final Fantasy Ex" and not "Final Fantasy 10" when we were kids?
This was my favourite announcement this e3. Can't wait to finally play ask those classics myself!
Hell yeah, finally! Now show dates for the other two also!
Is it only me that see all the announcements around the same date and thinks the direct rumoured was cancelled/postponed...
@thesilverbrick Agreed it's all about the price. X/X2 is frequently on sale on PC and PS3 for £9.99
Very "Octopath"-looking artwork. Very nice. I'm very much looking forward to playing these Final Fantasy re-releases on my Switch.
Retail please.
So excited about X and X-2. I played X only for a bit until I got stuck at the swimmy ball game I had to play in the first part of the game. I couldn’t beat it and thus stopped playing it. This is waaaay back in the day on Ps2 when it came out. Im sure I really missed out on a lot of this game because of that “wall.” I’m excited to try my luck at it again.
It's fishy they don't talk about retail release. If it doesn't exist I'll buy them on Xbox One for the achievements, let alone the cheaper price because of the really interesting weekly sales on digital games. I'm sorry.
Awesome I've been waiting for these two games to drop. Can't wait to play for the first time in April. As for physical releases, I think they'll both get one (thank the lords!). As Spectra mentioned above, a physical Switch copy of FF12 has been displayed on the site for a good while now and while that's not the same case for FFX/X2 HD if you check on twitter, the game doesn't have the #eShop label attached to it. While I know that's not the best piece of evidence to try and back up a claim it's still a difference from Okami HD which did have #eShop label attached to it when it was first announced.
That's also the same case for Katamari Damacy which only has the #eShop label attached to it on the Nintendo UK twitter account (still salty that Europe never got the game physically) but not for the North American one (while it was only a GameStop exclusive over there at least a physical copy still existed).
Again I know this shouldn't be used a cold hard facts but I do think they greatly raise the possibilities of the two games getting physical editions on the Switch.
@Kiz3000 Too many stutters with "umms" and "ahhhs" and many "hahas" and "lalas" in there. Play it and you'll see. You know when you go watch a YouTuber where he/she make a 10 minutes vlog where 85% of the time was them saying the phrase "you know." That's how bad the voice work are in FFX.
FF7 and 9 are the ones I feel more like playing at the moment but I will be getting these one for sure too. Hope FF10 includes the original soundtrack though like the PS4 version, not a fan of the remastered soundtrack.
Currently playing Tales of Vesperia, keep the JRPGs coming by all means.
Guess I'm dipping into the FF franchise sooner than I thought.
@Kiz3000 emopoleon is my second favorite Pokémon ever (second only to its pre-evolution piplup)
Zodiac Age is good. But I been moved my classic FF collection to PC. Done needing to buy my collection over every 2 console generations.
https://store.steampowered.com/sale/final-fantasy/
Still hoping for physical releases of VII, IX, and Crystal Chronicles. But I wouldn't be surprised if they were digital only.
As one who has never played a Final Fantasy game (the closest so far has been Bravely Default), are these entries, as a whole, decent and worth getting?
The only numbered entry that I've ever heard get completely panned was the original launch of FF XIV.
Come on Square and Capcom! How will I ever have time for these plus dragon's dogma... too much goodness in April!
Completed X on PS2, never got round to finishing X2 or XII so super excited to get them on my JRPG glory machine the switch
Port or not, never thought I'd see the day a numbered FF past VI would appear on a Nintendo console again. I'm taken by it, really... just enjoying the moment. April though, whoo boy... I did NOT know these were coming THIS soon! I have NO idea when I'm going to get to them as I'm JUST wrapping up Octopath Traveler, and STILL have Ys VIII to play before my "RPG fix" is satiated. At least Ys VIII is an Action RPG, so I can usually run those faster. I believe FFXII is essentially an Action RPG, but I've forgotten, and I can't remember if X and X-2 are turn-based or not. Glad to see these games, but man are they throwing a (delightful) wrench in my gaming plans!
I for one am excited. I found X and X2 more fun when it was portable(vita). I wonder how Zodiac Age will be in handheld mode? Any chance FF 13 comes to the Switch?
Wake me up when they announce the date for IX.
Be gentle with my wallet 2019.
I need a money tree.
glad they are releasing the good FF games before trash7
Just need 6 released for it and the remaster of 4. They can keep 7.
@brickbear ff6 really needs a remake. ff7 isn't trash btw its a CLASSIC on so many levels
I played every FF up to X so Im so excited about finally playing #12!
I'd be checking some performance reviews before making a purchase honestly. In my experience Squeenix has a bad habit of porting games to new platforms and not really doing a thorough amount of testing.
So many RPGs that I want... So little time.
@RazumikhinPG @Bunkerneath @illmatic20xx @KeenDreams @Dualmask @Panopticon @Lando_ @Tarolusa @bluemujika @Spectra
The physical version of both these games has been available for preorder for months, on both Amazon and BestBuy. So, at least for NA, if you just check online retailers you'll find out if a physical version is coming
@Blitzenexx
These are 2 of the greatest and most iconic JRPGs ever made. Yes, they're worth getting.
@JaxonH If Nintendo or Squeenix hasn't officially stated that a physical is or is not happening, then whatever Amazon or Best Buy says means nothing. Retailers will list whatever they want as a placeholder just so we have the option to pre-order with them. Release dates, price, and format don't mean anything.
@JaxonH: Thanks! Though I'm still confused as to why they're skipping VIII when all others from VII to XII (barring XI, which I understand is/was a MMO release) are hitting the Switch.
@JaxonH The games didn't even cross my mind until I saw this article, and I never preorder games anyway, so checking online retailers to see if a physical version is coming isn't part of my M.O. I get 99% of my physical games from Gamefly.
@Panopticon
That's... actually not correct. Maybe EU retailers list what they want, and Walmart/GS, but Amazon US and BestBuy only list official SKUs submitted by the publisher. I can't think of a single game BestBuy has ever listed that didnt exist. Unless you have evidence to the contrary for BestBuy?
So it very much does mean something. Especially when both list it. Even if BestBuy and Amazon both made false listings 0.01% of the time, the probability both would do it for the exact same SKU of game that doesnt exist is beyond astronomical.
But believe what you want. But I guarantee you 100% they are both physical in NA.
Is this for the UK release?
@Xcape_DuCkMAN_X
I've only ever played 4 so I'm really excited for Blitzball on the go
@Blitzenexx
FFVIII never came to PS4 either. So it's not like its skipping Switch, its just outright not on any current console. So there's nothing to port.
And there's alot of theories as to why that is, but the truth is we just dont know...
@Dualmask
I gotcha. Just trying to be helpful for next time.
@JaxonH Yeah they're not on Amazon UK.
@thesilverbrick Amazon in the US has them both listed at $49.99 for a physical copy. XII actually had a pre-order sale over Xmas and I got it for $39.99. It would seem third party ports are being priced cheaper than Nintendo's ports (thankfully!)
@JaxonH: I'd be curious to know the reason just for curiosity's sake, but I suppose speculation alone wouldn't really answer that.
