Register To Vote

The Register of Electors 2019-2020 was published came into force on the 15th February 2019 and is on display at your City Council’s offices, Garda Stations, Libraries, Post Offices and online at www.voter.ie. If you are aged 18 or over, check that your name, address and details are correct on the Register. 

If it is you are a first time voter you can now register to vote online.

At present if your details do not appear on the register and you are not included at another address you may apply for inclusion in the Supplement to the Register of Electors 2019/20 by completing an RFA2 inclusion in supplement form. If you are on the register but have moved address you must complete an RFA3 change of address supplement form.

If you have become an Irish Citizen and have never been on the Register of Electors you must fill in an (RFA2) form if you wish to be included in the Supplement to the Register of Electors.  However, if you are already on the Register of Electors and have become an Irish Citizen you must fill in an RFA 5 change of citizenship supplement form which will enable you to vote at all elections and referendums.

These are the only forms we are accepting at present.  You may download these forms at www.voter.ie or below.  Alternatively you can contact the Franchise Section at 222 5010 for a hard copy if you wish.

Supplement to the Register

If a person is not included in the Register of Electors currently in force, they may apply for entry in the Supplement to the Register. Persons entered in the Supplement are entitled to vote at elections/referenda held during the currency of the Register. Being on the Register does not automatically entitle a person to vote in ALL elections – please see ‘Voting Rights’.  Any individual entered in the Supplement will automatically be entered in the Register of Electors published the following February.  

Registering for Inclusion in the Draft Register of Electors

The Draft Register of Electors is published on the 1st November each year and is available for inspection in Libraries, Post Offices and Garda Stations. Any individual entered in the Draft Register will automatically be entered in the Register of Electors published the following February. To be included in the Draft Register, please check the conditions listed below and if you are eligible, then complete a RFA voter registration form and return it to the Franchise Section, Dublin City Council, Block 4, Floor 4, Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8, before 25th November.

Note: You may be required to produce documentary evidence to support your eligibility to vote, e.g. a birth certificate, a certificate of naturalisation.

If you would like to have an application form posted out to you, you can request it using our Self Service Portal. Please select Request an Application Form from the list. 

Conditions for Registration

Age: a person must be at least 18 years of age on the day the register comes into force (15th February).  Every resident aged 18 and upwards is entitled to be on the register.

Residence: a person must be ordinarily resident at the address at which he/she wishes to be registered.

Citizenship: every adult resident in the state is entitled to be registered, their citizenship determines the type of elections they may vote in (see below)

Amendment to Draft Register of Electors

The Draft Register of Electors is published on the 1st November each year and electors have until the 25th November of that year to make any amendments to their registration details (e.g. change of address).  Please complete the RFA1 – Correction to Draft Register form and return it to the Franchise Section, Dublin City Council, Block 4, Floor 4, Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8.   by the 25th November each year.

Inclusion in the Supplement to the Register of Electors

What to do if an election is due soon and you are not registered

If an election or referendum is due soon and you are not included in the current Register of Electors or the Supplement, you should apply to have your name included in the Supplement to the Register by completing an RFA2 – Inclusion in Supplement form, ensuring it has been signed by a member of the Garda Siochána, and return it by post to the Franchise Section, Dublin City Council, Block 4, Floor 4, Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8.

Change your voting address

In order to change your registered voting address, you must complete an RFA3 – Change of Address supplement form, ensuring it has been signed by a member of the Garda Siochána, and return it by post to the Franchise Section, Dublin City Council, Block 4, Floor 4, Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8.

Supplement forms must be submitted before the fourteenth day (Sundays, public holidays and Good Friday excluded) before polling day. This is a statutory requirement. Eligible electors whose names are included in the supplement will be entitled to vote at an election or referendum held during the lifetime of the register

Postal Vote

Registration authorities prepare a postal voters list as part of the Register of Electors. Applications for inclusion in the list must be received by 25th November at the latest.
