Stay on target
Netflix has casually dabbled in the anime scene for quite some time now, but it’s about to go all in. The company is introducing over ten new anime series and movies in the future, including things like Devilman Crybaby, which we’ve discussed at length before. The rest of the series lining out what Netflix is bringing to its streaming service runs the gamut between quirky and strange to the more accessible.
LeSean Thomas’s Cannon Busters follows the story of a friendship droid and maintenance robot who join up with a fugitive who’s on the run. It’s one of the most interesting anime series on the slate because it’s being written by Bee & Puppycat’s Natasha Allegri, a writer from The Witcher, and other talented folks. It’s going to be an interesting one for sure.
B: The Beginning is a story of the nation of Cremona following a protagonist named Koku who investigates the serial killer Killer B and the crimes he ends up committing. Then there’s the Rilakkuma series, which follows San-X’s adorable and lazy bear as he navigates his way through daily adventures. It’ll span 13 episodes, most of which will probably involve Rilakkuma being lazy in some way.
There’s a remake of Knights of the Zodiac/Saint Seiya on the horizon too, a modern twist on the classic series that follows the protectors of the goddess Athena as she battles against Olympian gods who are bent on destroying mankind. This is a big one as far as the anime slate goes.
Additional series include Lost Song, A.I.C.O. Incarnation, Sword Gai: The Animation, Baki, Kakegurui, Fate/Apocrypha, Children of the Whales, and Godzilla, interestingly enough, as an animated movie. There’s a little something for everyone on the upcoming Netflix slate, but it’s a bit of a tradeoff, as Disney is also pulling its content from the service and starting its own streaming service. At least there’s a whole lot more coming in terms of anime and other animated entertainment.
This slate of anime is coming later this year as well as scattered throughout 2018.
