Checkdowns: Tecmo Super Bowl 2012

6th September 2011

Continuing a tradition of mine that stretches back to 2006, it's time to link this year's updated version of Tecmo Super Bowl at Tecmobowl.org.

For the uninitiated, this is a ROM of the original NES Tecmo Super Bowl, featuring the game's original graphics/sounds but with 32 teams and updated 2011 rosters. And, as always, you'll need an NES emulator to run the game. Have fun!

Checkdowns: Packers Win Super Bowl, in Tecmo Form

7th February 2011

A fitting way to cap off the 2010 campaign, here's Jordan Slocum's recreation of the Steelers' last play in SB XLV and Green Bay's celebration:

Thanks for a great season of Tecmo highlights, Jordan!

Tecmo Super Bowl XLV: Steelers vs. Packers

31st January 2011

It just wouldn't be Super Bowl week if I didn't post a Tecmo Super Bowl simulation of the game somewhere (a tradition I've maintained since 2008).

This year's version once again comes courtesy of Matt Knobbe and our friends at the Tecmo Super Bowl Repository:

(How did they do this? Matt and the other dedicated folks at the Knobbe.org message board have spent a lot of time over the years updating this classic Nintendo football game, including the introduction of a 32-team ROM a few seasons ago. Sounds complicated, but don't worry, it's easy for you to enjoy the fruits of their labor: just get yourself an NES emulator, download the 2010 version of Tecmo here, and play to your heart's content.

Checkdowns: Marshawn Lynch’s Okoye-esque Run, in Tecmo Form

11th January 2011

In the original Tecmo Super Bowl, Christian "The Nigerian Nightmare" Okoye was nearly impossible to tackle thanks to his monstrous "Hitting Power" attribute. How extreme were Okoye's abilities in the game? The Colts had only one player on their entire roster (Jon Hand) with sufficient HP for a chance at stopping him. As a result, Okoye was the undisputed king of "popcorning", Tecmo slang for defenders bouncing off of a ballcarrier with practically no effect, en route to the end zone.

Well, Okoye was undisputed before Saturday... But as Jordan Slocum shows us, Marshawn Lynch is apparently gunning for Okoye:

The really crazy part is that the real-life version might be more videogame-like than the digital recreation!

Checkdowns: DeSean Jackson’s Punt Return, in Tecmo Form

20th December 2010

From Tecmo-master Jordan Slocum:

"This one was probably the hardest to do, since punt returns are near impossible naturally on the game.  But DeSean Jackson earned it."

Yes he did.

Checkdowns: Josh Wilson’s Pick-6, in Tecmo Form

15th December 2010

Friend of the PFR Blog Jordan Slocum has another Tecmo Super Bowl video for us today -- this time, a recreation of Josh Wilson's game-ending interception of Matt Schaub on MNF:

Why is it that the Texans have been involved in so many Tecmo-worthy plays this season (and usually on the receiving end)?

Checkdowns: Garrard to Thomas, in Tecmo Form

15th November 2010

Did you see this ridiculous walk-off Hail Mary from David Garrard to Mike Thomas yesterday? Did you think to yourself, 'what would that play look like if re-enacted using 16-bit graphics?' Fortunately, Jordan Slocum has you covered with what he terms "more awesome Gus Johnson head exploding greatness":

It's pretty amazing how frequently Gus is assigned to the games that give him the best chance to showcase his signature broadcasting style.

Checkdowns: Schaub to Johnson, in Tecmo Form

18th October 2010

A few weeks ago, PFR Blog fan Jordan Slocum sent us his Tecmo Super Bowl re-creation of Joe Flacco's game-winning TD pass to T.J. Houshmandzadeh, and today he has another one for us... In Jordan's words, "it's Gus Johnson-tastic":

Compare it to the real Matt Schaub-Andre Johnson hookup here.

Checkdowns: Flacco to Houshmandzadeh, in Tecmo Form

5th October 2010

Given my tradition of posting Tecmo Super Bowl videos last season, PFR reader Jordan sent me his own re-creation of Joe Flacco's game-winning TD pass to T.J. Houshmandzadeh this past Sunday. Enjoy -- and to all the Steeler fans out there, I'm sorry...
