After last week's launch of the new MacBook Pro's with the new M1 Pro and M1 Max Apple Silicon chips, we've had our hands on the new SoCs, testing out the 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, and the tremendous memory performance of the new designs:

And just to respond to myself here, Andrei reckons that based on Apple's images, it's 432mm2 for the M1 Max. That's absolutely huge for a laptop SoC. There's a good reason for this - it integrates a discrete-level GPU - but it's still unprecedented

We'll see what the teardowns report for die size, but it'll easily be over 300mm2. Given that A100 was 800mm2+ on 7nm, a 57B 5nm chip may very well pass 400mm2

Apple's keynote is still going on, but the transistor count on the M1 Max is just astounding. 57B transistors is more than even NVIDIA's Ampere A100 GPU, the biggest GPU out there. M1 Max is built on 5nm, so it'll be a good deal smaller. But that's still going to be a large chip

While one more card won't fix the current video card market, the RX 6600 does have one notable thing going for it. Since it's based on salvaged Navi 23 dies, AMD & co now have a means to sell those chips at retail, which can only help the overall card supply

Today Xiaomi announces the 11T and 11T Pro - a Dimensity 1200 and a Snapdragon 888 variant the same phone, characterised by a large 5000mAh battery, and either 67W or 120W charging - we've had the phones for review and uncovered some interesting aspects:

I'm finally back to work. Thank you to everyone for the kind words while I recovered from COVID. And a big thank you to to keeping AT running while I was out.

While today's announcement is primarily a marketing exercise, it's also a critical point for Intel, as this is where things get real. Intel is ramping up their massive marketing machine to prepare for next year's launch; DG2 is no longer just an abstract chip in a lab

It’s starting to get alarmingly late in the game for Sony not to have VRR working yet on the PS5.

It's taken a bit longer than usual, but AMD's Zen 3 (Cezanne) APUs are finally coming to the retail market. has the full scoop on AMD's mono-die chips, and where these 4/6/8 core parts stand in AMD's overall desktop processor lineup.

Every time I build an AM4 system, I end up grumbling about the clip-based cooler retention system, and this time was no exception. I really, *really* hope that AM5 goes to quad screws/push-pins, ala the Wraith coolers. I find screws so much easier to work with and secure...

Meanwhile, Intel's big process and packaging presentation is next Monday. Intel isn't offering too many details in advance, but we have our fingers crossed for a proper process roadmap update, especially as Intel looks to move into the contract foundry business

We've discovered weird behaviour on the OnePlus 9 Pro flagship: Popular apps are performance limited, while benchmarks are unaffected. Is this battery optimisation, or misrepresentation of the user experience?
