The district administrations in Yadgir and Raichur celebrated the birth anniversary of noted poet-saint Devara Dasimayya on Wednesday. Deputy Commissioner of Yadgir R. Ragapriya and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Raichur K.R. Durugesh inaugurated the programmes held in their respective districts.
They recalled the Vachanas which Devara Dasimayya wrote and said that they feel proud that the great poet-saint was born in Yadgir district’s Mudnoor village.
The poet-saint condemned the prevailing iniquitous social practices during his time through his Vachans, Dr. Ragapriya said in Yadgir.
Yadgir Government Degree College principal Subhaschandra Koulagi, who gave a special lecture on Dasimayya, said that the Vachanakara, who was born in a weaver family, wrote more than 1,000 Vachanas but only 150 of them are available now.
“All his Vachanas throw focus on evil practices in society and try to help people overcome them,” he added.
Mr. Durugesh said in Raichur that Dasimayya, like Basaveshwara, fought injustice meted out to women. He sought equal rights for them. Today’s youth should collect his Vachanas, read them and walk on the path he has laid [through his Vachanas] for a better society, he said.
