Product description

Starring Victoria Wood, Julie Walters, Celia Imrie, Duncan Preston, with the snobby continuity announcer played by Susie Blake, Acorn Antiques is a mini soap opera set in a shop on the outskirts of Manchesterford. Viewers are gripped with the everyday dramas that beset Miss Babs (Celia Imrie), Berta (Victoria Wood) and the glamorous Mrs Overall (Julie Walters).

Now each thrilling episode is available together for the first time on this BBC DVD, including Babs and the Cup of Coffee, Mrs Overall and her Apron and the memorable classic Berta coming through the Doorway. Re-live the drama as Mrs Overall serves up another batch of macaroons and Babs discusses the future of the shop. What will be this week's riveting cliff hanger? Will the set survive?

Written by Victoria Wood, Acorn Antiques was Produced and Directed by Geoff Posner and first transmitted as part of Victoria Wood as Seen on TV in January 1985.

There aren't many DVDs that are so funny they can litterally make you wet yourself laughing the third time you watch them, but Acorn Antiques somehow manages it. Although the DVD doesn't have any "extras" (it would have been nice to have the Acorn Antiques spin-offs in the sushi bar and The Mall), it's well worth the price to be able to relive the "glory" of Acorn Antiques. It's a comedy that works on many levels, some people find it hysterically funny on its own, but those who remember the original "Crossroads" and the "Making of" for "Eastenders" will find this even funnier. It's a funny old show because there are no catchphrases as such and yet you'll find yourself mentioning having your macaroons on a low light since Wednesday or having just whipped your coconut buns out of the microwave for weeks, nay, even years. And if that's not enough, you'll be pinching insults from Susie Blake's excellent continuity announcer between the scenes, if you don't, then perhaps you suffer from frigidity. I know I do!

In my dismissive attitude I missed every one of the episodes when first shown on television. The little lady kept telling me about it, so, here we get the entire collection on one DVD. I enjoyed it so much... a send up of Crossroads televising maybe, with wobbly sets and furniture, missed cue's etc etc. A classic look at how it should be done to make people laugh. So much going on all the time, it screams out for reviewing time and time again so as not to miss out on anything..... a splendid purchase. !

Loved this dvd of all episodes of Acorn Antiques written & starring the late great Victoria Wood. A great send up of Crossroads for those that are old enough to remember that tacky soap opera 😀

I am going to go against other opinions and label this a disaster. It runs for 66 minutes, which is an hour too long. Don't get me wrong - I love Victoria Wood (indeed "Dinner Ladies" is one of the funniest and well-written comedies ever), and her one-woman show is brilliant. Julie Walters is another of my favourite actresses, but this show is abysmal. The concept is good - making fun of the Crossroads mish-mash of the early years. I well remember Mr Hunter appearing from a doorway to deliver a speech. Nobody knew why nor where he came from. But to try and almost re-create it was a mistake. The disjointed sketches, linked by a ridiculous newsreader, just do not work. As I watched it, I found myself praying that it was going to get better, but it didn't. A dreadful shame, given such a stellar cast. With considerable pruning, it might make a funny half-hour, because there are quite a lot of good moments of comedy in it. But there are too many flat spots. I have a feeling that I may cop some criticism for my review, but that's what opinions are all about.

Série de sketches stupide et maladroite. Malgré la présence de Julie Walters, que j'apprécie toujours énormément; ceci n'est pas digne d'elle.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit choppy

I was a bit disappointed in this series. While Britcoms are my favorite genre, I found Acorn Antiques to be so choppy I couldn't follow the loosely organized storylines. I gave it 3 stars because I did watch it all the way through. Also, I'm going to give it another try in a few months to see if my opinion changes. Perhaps if I had just finished watching a serious mini-series or something I wasn't in the right frame of mind for such a comedy.
