Guerilla Film Makers Handbook 3e Paperback – 25 Jan. 2006

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 64 ratings

Brand new edition of this bestseller - the only book an amateur film maker needs! An entirely new, updated, and expanded third edition of the UK's best-selling filmmaker's bible, last updated in 2000. This new edition builds upon the most successful features of the previous books. It is larger in format, and includes hundreds more illustrations, diagrams, and box-outs. The Q&A approach with experts is attractive in content and easy to digest. Where else can you listen to over 150 of the most knowledgeable people as they discuss their particular areas of expertise? And being filmmakers (not historians or lecturers), Jones and Jolliffe know which questions to ask and which are irrelevant or a distraction. They get to the core. The first half of this book is expanded with significantly more expert interviewees, delving into new areas of filmmaking not covered in the second edition. And all of the case studies are brand new, featuring in-depth stories from recent low-budget success stories like "Shaun of the Dead", "Open Water", and "Saw". This book comes with a DVD, packed with further Interviews with filmmakers, as well as theatrical trailers and other goodies.

even though I just got the book Im about 25% through and I am truely inspired, educated and relieved.

why relieved? because I am on the verge of doing exactly what most of these film makers have done but lacked knowledge of what to do next, its also inspiring to push me on more, the book keeps on pushing me harder to get to where i want to be and inspiring me to do better.

Great Books, I have been six months at my TV/FILM/MEDIA/PHOTOGRAPHY Course now and I love it. I am in the middle of shooting my first short film. I don't like Editing so far, but with this book and my own PC at home, I am starting to get the hang of it. Great Books. I have bought my first movie camera, and starting to get to know it. This book helps, I like it!

I am 15 and very eager to get into the film industry. This book is packed with helpful interviews that cover a wide range of topics such is training, Pre-production, productions, Post-Production, finance and others. It even evaluates film school which was a major plus for me. If you want a career in the film industry, BUY THIS BOOK!

I am mixed about this book. The content is great, but the emphasis is on shooting on film. In an age of HD digital video, I am not sure that's really essential anymore. But if you are, then this is an excellent book. The cartoons are a bit gimmky tho.

Just full of terrible advice. For example ‘don’t make a short movie, as no one will see it and no one cares about short movie awards’

It’s just full of interviews with people thinking ‘my way or the high way’ nonsense.

As a young film enthusiast I was debating the pros and cons of going to film school or attempting to break into the film industry alone. This book is a great read for anybody trying to make these decisions, I feel much more confident and informed now that I've read the filmmakers handbook!

Q & A says it all for the layout of this book. Everything is layout as an interview, it's bit like sitting across a table from someone and talking to them directly. You can pick up useful information you've never heard of but there not exactly going to walk you though it step by step. This is not a guide book and far from it. It has the opinions of working professionals within a very difficult job market. You can not read this book cover to cover. Its more of a book you would pick up if you had question in mind, a lot like a dictionary or encyclopedia. It won't help you if you have no idea about film making or what you project is going to be realistic, because frankly a lot of people are unrealistic when it comes to scriptwriting. If your goal is to write a magnificent script and sell it that's ok. But what I really want to know as someone interested, someone starting out on a journey of discovery is what is a good basic idea, basic script that anyone can follow. So in summary I think combined with other books this is a great book to have on your shelf simply to read now and again.
