This series is aimed toward children, but I would argue that an adult beginner would benefit significantly too. Very thoroughly thought-out with simple explanations. Lots of color and charts. The Reference section is like a mini poster on many of the pages. The only thing this book is not is a complete reference of chords and scales. Which is good because you learn HOW to do it instead of not understanding and just memorizing some of them.
My only disappointment was no mention of neither Equal Temperament nor Microtuning. IMHO these subject are crucial to understanding music and would have done well to be included at the end of Section 7 (Instruments and Voices). It would have been nice to have the option of a hard cover too.
If you want to learn how to read music and/or understand it at a professional level then this book is for you. It’s the best book on music for beginners that I’ve ever seen. You’ll be off to a grand start. I also purchased the Math, Science and Language titles (as a buldle) from this series too. I recommend all four titles.
