The Tamil Genocide by Sri Lanka: The Global Failure to Protect Tamil Rights Under International Law Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

Sri Lanka’s government declared victory in May, 2009, in one of the world’s most intractable wars after a series of battles in which it killed the leader of the Tamil Tigers, who had been fighting to create a separate homeland for the country’s ethnic Tamil minority. The United Nations said the conflict had killed between 80,000 and 100,000 people in Sri Lanka since full-scale civil war broke out in 1983. A US State Department report offered a grisly catalogue of alleged abuses, including the killing of captives or combatants seeking surrender, the abduction and in some cases murder of Tamil civilians, and dismal humanitarian conditions in camps for displaced persons. Human Rights Watch said the U.S. report should dispel any doubts that serious abuses were committed during the final months of the 26-year civil war. The report gains added significance since, during these five months, the Sri Lankan Government denied independent observers, including the media and human rights organizations, access to the war zone, and conducted a “war without witnesses.” This book traces the ongoing engagement of international lawyer Francis A. Boyle during the last years of the conflict. Boyle was among the very few addressing the international legal implications of the Sri Lankan Government’s grave and systematic violations of Tamil human rights while the conflict was taking place. This is the first book to develop an authoritative case for genocide against the Government of Sri Lanka under international law.

Finally, a book that looks at the ROOT of the problem!Mr. Francis Boyle is a leading American expert in international law. He was responsible for drafting the BiologicalWeapons Anti-Terrorism Act of 1989, the American implementing legislation for the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention. He served on the Board of Directors of Amnesty International (1988-1992), and represented Bosnia-Herzegovina at the World Court.-------This is a MUST read for anyone truly trying to understand facts, root causes. 1. Tamil ethnic conflict 2. The 'secret war' on Tamils of 2009 in spite of the successive regimes trying to "fool ALL the people All the time" including killing Sinhalese Journalists for speaking out Justice. When reading former BBC corresp. Frances Harrison's website StillCountingTheDead dot com ,I found a reference to another brilliantly written book 'Fleeting moment in my country...' by N. Malathy which described what REALLY happened in N. Sri Lanka between 2002-2009. It gives both the positive and negative sides, thus, staying with facts and observations, rather than judgmental. Hence a recommended read!A Fleeting Moment in My Country: The Last Years of the LTTE De-Facto StateIf you wanted to see an *independent* Award-winning BRITISH CHANNEL 4 News DOCUMENTARY, Google: "Sri Lanka Killing fields" and you can see it online, both parts 1 & 2.

Francis is a professor from Illinois university. He has been following the civil war since the start in 1980s.
In this book, Francis particularly focused Sri lanka govt's genocide of tamils between 2006 to 2009 and how global silence helped Sri lanka to carry out the genocide of tamils. He elaborates every incidents during the war.
It is a must read book if you want to know the history of Tamil Eelam and Sri lanka.

A technical and precise explanation of a sad chapter in the history of Sri Lankan Tamils concisely written by the foremost expert on Genocide that I can recognize. People who keep chanting the words "never again", especially those of the international organizations including the UN, should set about their tasks after reading this book only so that they may identify where the flaw lies in their approach.

I am sure the book is extremely interesting to students of politics, but I was expecting a narrative of the Tamil Genocide situation. A history easily readable. But this book in fact was more about international law etc. Next time I had better open a book and read the preview more thoroughly.

A book which chronicles the machinations of the ultra-nationalist Sinhalese state and its friends. A genocide was perpetuated on the Tamils of Northern Sri Lanka and almost none of it was mentioned on the main stream media. This book does a decent job on attributing factors on the lead up to the genocide and its aftermath. Commentators quibbling on 'collateral damage' should merely search for evidence on the Sri Lankan army 'kill' squads on the internet. Time for a War Crimes Tribunal and packing off most of the Sri Lankan government off for long incarcerations.

I wish this book did justice to the civilians who suffered, but the Author has failed miserably to back his statements with facts and the use of “genocide” loosely as a marketing gimmick make this another propaganda for the LTTE sympathizes.

This writer is regurgitating TAmil Net propaganda. He has not done his own research and just parroting the views of the LTTE rump groups. It is a waste of money to buy it.
