Fantasy, the Bomb, and the Greening of Britain: Romantic Protest, 1945–1980

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 1 rating

This work explores the essential ideas and assumptions of three very different cultural developments in post-World War II Britain: the fantasy literature of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien and the response it provoked; the protests that emerged in the late 1950s against Britain's possession of nuclear weapons; and the early Green movement of the 1960s and 1970s. It shows that these three products of middle-class culture should be placed within the British intellectual and cultural tradition of romantic protest against industrialised society.

Veldman eloquently and convincingly unearths the tradition of British romantic protest--and its major advocates--stretching back into the the 1700s, but with a focus on the post-WWII period. In following the romantic-protest thread, she connects diverse movements and individuals. She shows the persistent resonance of romantic protest among the British middle class but also the philosophy's contradictions--and sometimes unsavory elements--that weakened it and thus the movements it supported.

I picked up this book mainly to learn about the history of British environmentalism, to complement my research on American environmentalism. Veldman's history of the early British Green movement is succinct, informative, and well connected by her underlying thesis. At the same time, I was happily surprised to learn about the movement's links with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and its philosophical underpinnings in romantic protest. The vital connections between thoughts and actions, different eras separated by centuries, diverse historical actors, and the concerns of the present world make this a history well worth reading today.
