Editorial Reviews

Bridge of Sighs, Robin Trower's sophomore album following his departure from Procol Harum. Lauded critically, commercially a breakthrough, the album saw Robin push his trio's initial concept into exciting new territory. Accompanied by James Dewar on soulful vocal and bass duty and Reg Isidore underpinning their psychedelic blues sound with masterful drumming. Producer and former Procol Harum bandmate Matthew Fisher and Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick take on control room duties to help bring this stunning collection of songs together. This 3CD/1Bluray expanded 50th anniversary edition contains the original remastered album, along with a newly mixed version of the album in Stereo and Atmos. These are unedited versions of tracks from the album, which were originally edited down to fit a side of a vinyl and presented here in full for the first time. Added to this, there are a selection of previously unreleased outtakes and alternative versions and a full live concert from the Record Plant in 1974 across 2 CDs. The Blu-ray contains the full 2024 Unedited Atmos version of the album, hi-res 96/24 version of the original 1974 mix, an instrumental version of the album, Record Plant 1974 and additional outtakes not featured on the CDs. Format: 3 CD/1 Blu-ray housed in a DVD style hardback book, with a 24-page booklet with new interviews conducted by David Sinclair, Robin Trower and producer Matthew Fisher, along with testimonials from Bryan Ferry, Robert Fripp, Steve Lukather, Clive Bunker, Andy Parker and previously unseen photographs.

Inspiration! and a must have for real Trower fans
This album has been a great inspiration for me starting in 1974 when i first heard it. I became a guitar player because of it. Still playing and listening to this still today! The CD set is great. I liked hearing the extended parts that I never heard before and the dry mixes on one of the CD's. It is a real treat! On the Blu-Ray 2024 remaster there are 6 different audio mixes to choose from (see picture). The last one excludes James Dewar's vocals so you can hear just the music from the original album as we know it. One might ask why remove those great vocals all I can say is I found it very interesting listening to it this way for the first time. You can pick up on some guitar things the vocal covered up. I don't listen to music from my TV blue ray so I ripped my Blu-Ray to play it in my MPC media player on my PC from the MKV file. The file from the 2024 remaster has the 6 audio options that sound great on my PC sound system. Each of the 6 audio choices sound a bit different and depending on your audio equipment you can choose the one that suits it best. I wanted to point this out because I seen someone post a comment somewhere asking about why he could only hear the stereo mix. The audio choices are shown in the attached pic and you have to select the one you want to hear.

"Every time I bend a string, Robin Trower is not far away. The man lives his playing and hangs on every note." Robert Fripp.

For Trower fans this is something to really consider purchasing. Disc 1 is the remastered (but not thankfully remixed) original album. The sound is now cleaner and clearer than the original album. But it doesn't sacrifice that certain sound and feel of the original album. Reg Isidore's (RIP) drums are just a bit cleaner, James Dewar's (RIP) bass can now be heard in it's proper place in the mix, down low but you can hear the individual notes. His soulful voice is still as we remember, deep, warm and soulful. Trower's guitar is still front and center, his Hendrix influence to the fore, but with more clarity in the sound. Don't worry about any sound destroying compression--the mix is like the original album's sound--just cleaner.

Disc 2 is a 2024 stereo mix but with some extra goodies replaced on the album's songs that were left off the original album, which was slightly edited for LP release. These remixed tracks contain the originally recorded music which is great to hear. Also here are various outtakes, very short radio spots, and instrumental rehearsal tracks, all well worth hearing for Trower's guitar playing. Hearing these tracks as they were originally recorded gives you a bit of the feeling of hearing the "real" album as it was put down on tape.

Disc 3 is a contemporary live set from the Record Plant in '74 including most of the album tracks plus songs "Alethea", "Daydream", "I Can't Wait Much Longer", and "Rock Me Baby". The trio is in typical smokin' hot form. The sound is very good.

Disc 4 is the Blu-Ray that includes the '24 remastered original album and the remix tracks, plus outtakes and rarities and the live set.

The packaging. Hmmm. A minor quibble. There's trade size thick hardboard covers which is great. But for whatever reason the discs are packaged so as to make them hard to get out of the full size pockets, because instead of using one page per pocket, the disc pockets are attached back to back in sets of two. This also makes reading the 24 page notes a bit difficult because you can't open the book completely in order to read easily.

As I said--the packaging is a minor inconvenience. Its still about the music--and on that, this set is still smokin' hot with even better sound. If you can swing the bucks and are a fan of this album (and as I write this, you can find it for sale), get this.

this 2024 deluxe edition is chock full of content !! It's an astounding album made more astonishing by a dearth of bonus tracks, a sublime 5.1 remix (extraordinary !!) and live tracks and even commercials from the time! A lovely book and essay and sturdy boxset construction not unlike the Tull reissues
The best feature is the remix of the album - every track is longer, with different takes as the basis - its seems really different to the original and astonishing - I love this reissue to bits and thanks to RT and the label for going above and beyond - hopefully more Tower re issues are follow in the same mode - an ESSENTIAL purchase!

IT's simple - if you bought Bridge of Sighs when it was originally released and rebought it in different media over the following decades, you need this. You get the original stereo mix, a new 2024 stereo mix (which sounds like it uses different takes on at least some of the guitar and the vocals (which are unfortunately not mixed as far forward as the original), a live album and a BluRay with an Atmos mix which I haven't listened to yet.

Being a Robin Trower fan I jumped at the opportunity to get the Bridge of Sighs 50th Anniversary edition 4 disc set. Most of the negative comments were on the packaging especially looking at the booklet and getting the discs out of the cardboard sleeves in which they are housed. I have to agree with the packaging comments however my big concern is in navigating the menus on the surround sound disc (#4). It is exceedingly difficult to determine what the highlighted selection is as the words become somewhat bolder but only if you’re staring hard. Also very difficult to navigate the audio options as I can’t get the disc to highlight Dolby Atmos or 5.1 Surround and then get back to the play disc option. I really want to hear this great music in surround, but not at the cost of my sanity!

This is a must own! Longtime coming for the Blu-ray. Audio. Glade they waited and did it Blu-ray Dolby atmos. In stead of a dvd audio disk. Everything about this set is awesome 👌!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Trower at his creative peak.

Excellent album. First disk is different from the original. Longer songs and seem to be different takes in some instances. More of a companion to the original than a replacement. The live at the record plant disk is a nice bonus.

What can you say about this album? It's an all time classic and the second disc with the unedited versions of all the tracks just makes it even better. The only reason this isn't a 5 star review is because the packaging is flawed in that it's extremely hard to read the book without removing all 4 discs and each pair of the 4 discs slots into the same cardboard area with some of the discs touching each other which could lead to scratching in the long term.
