Regimental Losses in the American Civil War Paperback – December 6, 2002

3.6 3.6 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

Regimental Losses is one of the most important reference sources for anyone studying America's Civil War. William F. Fox, a Colonel during the war, used documents from both the Federal Government and State Governments to compile this massive work. Regimental Losses includes statistics and analyses detailing the number of men killed in particular battles; the regiments that lost the most men throughout the war and in particular battles; the "Three Hundred Fighting Regiments" of the Union Army; the total number of men who enlisted by state; and losses by state. But Fox's work is not all about the numbers. Fox includes chapters on Generals, Chaplains, and Surgeons killed in battle; a history of each Army Corps; famous Divisions and Brigades; and the history of U. S. Colored Regiments and their losses in the war. A concluding chapter provides losses in the Confederate Army, including Confederate Generals killed in action; the strength of the various Confederate Armies; and losses in individual Confederate Regiments in particular battles. Anyone studying the American Civil War, from the most seasoned scholar to the newest enthusiast, should have Fox's Regimental Losses on their library shelves. Index included.

I have always wanted this book for the information it contains. Any serious student of the American Civil War should have one. It has proven invaluable to me over the years.

The book is what I though it would be. Loaded with information. I not quite sure why it is formatted as it is. It is hard to follow. Looking up specific regiments can be difficult. A much needed resource material.

This indispensable reference is unusable in this format. The tables of figures can't be matched to their respective regiments. Many of the individual listings are pure gobbledygook. Somebody should have paged through this before selling it in this format. For shame.

Many typo errors in the Kindle edition. Reader is warned to read carefully, since errors are common (e.g., "1881" showed up as "1861" in 3 places).

I am buying this book in hard cover (always buy history books in hard cover). I have been referencing this book for over twenty years. There isn't a counterpart to this book! No body has put the effort or energy into a research book like Fox has. Any Civil War researcher or teacher who does not use this book is not using the right research tools.

As far as I am concerned (BA in Military History EIU '96 and USN Veteran) there isn't another book unless you want to read the official records/regimental records (e.g. 2 NJ AG Reports) to get the information you need in a method which can be considered quick and to the point.

I am FINALLY buying this book.

Remember, hard back - yes more expensive, but, it will live WAY past you...

Classic book on unit losses and battle losses. Good starting place for regimental research and an understanding of the huge losses that shaped a generation of history.

This wonderful reference has been invaluable in my research of the various Civil War Regiments and the number of casualties they incurred during the war. The book is easy to use and would be an asset to everyone's Civil War library.

I have found that this book is extremely good as a source reference. If you are interested in researching the Civil War, particularly if you are looking for a certain regiment then this is a fantastic place to start!
