And that's how the 1st Doctor meets the 12th Doctor, with 1500 years between them. While they regard each other, the snowflakes freeze in position in the air around them. Birds freeze on the wing, people freeze, flames freeze, everything pauses. Except for the Doctors and one person. And one THING.
This Christmas Special originally aired in December 2017. It is about 56 minutes without commercials. If you buy it on disc, English subtitles are available on both the episode and the one Bonus Feature.
If you follow Doctor Who at all, you know that this is the last episode for Peter Capaldi (plays the 12th Doctor), Steven Moffat (long-time writer and show runner) and Brian Minchin (producer).
Warning – You probably aren't inclined to do so, but you do not want to watch the Bonus before you have seen the episode, as there are spoilers:
...bonus... "Dr Who Extra" (23 minutes) Commentators include Steven Moffat, David Bradley (plays the 1st Doctor redux), Mark Gatiss (plays the Captain), Pearl Mackie, Rachel Talalay (director), Nicholas Briggs (voice of the Daleks) and Matt Lucas. This bonus has clips from the show, clips from rehearsals and little sit-downs with the commentators.
They recreated the original all-white TARDIS control room from the era of the first Doctors, though they couldn't help but add a couple improvements. Mark Gatiss proposes that that "just goes to show how quickly and easily we could remake those missing episodes." Now THAT'S an idea!
It was a relief to me that I really liked this Christmas Special, as I am not a fan of the mediocre 2016 special, "The Return of Doctor Mysterio." "Twice Upon a Time" has a lot of humor and the feel-good Christmas-y feeling of the 2010 " Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol ". (I don't know about you, but my favorite is still the 2007 "Voyage of the Damned", Season 4 with David Tennant.)

It is at 2160p24, so filmic speed, so it is a slight difference from the original 25fps, but closer than the speedup to 30fps that Americans are used to. The disk (like all 4K) is region free, so it can be played anywhere in the world - which is why they chose to go for 24fps, rather than do 25fps and 30fps versions.
It does not contain an HD Blu Ray copy or digital copy, so you can only play this if you have an Ultra HD Blu Ray Player (not just upscaling). To watch in 4K you must also be watching on a 4K TV, though players will downscale to HD - defeating the purpose of buying this disk.
Story-wise this is a great end to Capaldi's Doctor and brings back David Bradley, but this time as the first Doctor, not as William Hartnell. It is very continuity heavy though, so I wouldn't watch it until I had seen Capaldi's run.
Now I'm just waiting for Jodie Whittaker in 4K, please!
