Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography (English Edition) Kindle Ausgabe
Andrew Morton uncovers the true story of the biggest celebrity of our age.
Everyone knows Tom Cruise—or at least what he wants us to know. We know that the man behind the smile overcame a tough childhood to star in astonishing array of blockbusters: Top Gun, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, several Mission: Impossible movies, and more. We know he has taken artistic chances, too, earning him three Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. But beyond that, the picture becomes a bit less clear…
We know that Tom is a devoted follower of the Church of Scientology. We know that, despite persistent rumors about his sexuality, he has been married to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes. But it was not until he jumped on Oprah's couch to proclaim his love for Katie and denounced Brooke Shields for turning to the "Nazi science" of psychiatry that we began to realize how much we did not know about the charming, hardworking star. For all the headlines and the rumors, the real Tom Cruise has remained surprisingly hidden—until now.

It has I must say got me gripped into reading more about this "religion".
I can almost understand if people were born into "it", as they don't know any better, but to follow the writings of a sci-fi writer as a whole way of life, is beyond my comprehension.
Gripping read well written.
The writing was that good, I bought the book about Princess Diana.... and I don't "do" the Royal Family at all.
While enjoying his films I have never warmed to Tom Cruise. His manic toothy smile. His short man machismo. But I’ve been fascinated by his film successes - how does he do it ? He doesn’t seem like a truly great actor though he is always believable.
Author Andrew Morton shows a man who is driven to be on top, and who knows how to win even after couch jumping put his career in the toilet. There is a sympathetic look at Tom Cruise’s origins. His angry father who deserted his family and left them broke. Tom the outsider at school due to being short, skinny and dyslexic.
Tom is not so relatable when it comes to his relationships. While the author disputes allegations about the Cruise/Kidman marriage (‘Tom is gay, Nicole has affairs’) he uncovers something darker. He shows Tom as an insecure man who controls his partners, spies on them and despite flowers and romance, alienates them. Tom gets extra tactics after joining Scientology. A religion that excels in authoritarian control is the perfect match for the insecure boy who became a movie star.
It’s an enthralling read, and the author does not judge the players, though Nicole’s portrait is damning. The only downside is that it ends when Tom is married to Katie Holmes. I’ve love to hear this author’s view of the last ten years . Highly recommended.
20 years ago, I bought a biography of L. Ron Hubbard and it was one of the best books I have ever read, he was such a liar that it was one of the funniest books I have ever read, it made me laugh out loud reading about his exploits. What I did realise from that book is that LRH had many psychological problems roiling around in there and his "religion" was nonsense, designed by him to make money. VERY clear after reading his biography his innate fear of psychiatry! I also read his book Battlefield Earth after reading the biography to see if he could actually write and I enjoyed it a lot as well.
Andrew Morton, I think, describes Tom to a T, it would be difficult to guage with him when he was really feeling something and when he was acting.
I also wanted to read this book because I'm Australian and "Nic" is a favourite of mine. She didn't come off very well in this book and I was, at times, feeling a little sorry for Tom, especially reading the transcript of their tapped conversation.
The very uncomfortable section of this book was reading about the ridiculous experience they "endured" making Eyes Wide Shut. To call cinema "art" is fair, but how far do you go before you realise you are being taken advantage of? Nicole took this whole ridiculous episode way too seriously and made herself and Stanley Kubrick look like silly wankers.
Andrew Morton skimmed over the Mimi Rogers episode, which I was glad of. The thing I most remember about the woman is her horrendous dress sense and her comment when Tom and Nicole separated "as you can imagine, I'm very happy today". What a venomous person to be happy about the destruction of a family. Her true colours, I suspect.
All in all, this was a terrific read, heavy on scientology, but not too much so. It had to be explained to the degree it was to understand the hold it now has on Tom and how it got that hold. A terrible shame and I hope he breaks away one day and can see it for the rubbish that it is. Operating Thetan VII - for heaven's sake!
