Lifetime is moving forward with plans for an Army Wives spinoff. The network has ordered a pilot for the project that will air as an episode of the drama’s current fourth season and has cast Gabrielle Union to star in it opposite Brigid Brannagh.
In the planted spinoff, penned by Army Wives writers Bruce Zimmerman and T.D. Mitchell, the show’s character Pamela Moran (Brannagh), recently divorced from her Delta Force soldier husband, returns to her former career as a police officer and becomes a detective for the Atlanta PD. Union will play the spinoff’s other lead, Pamela’s partner, Detective Gina Holt of the Atlanta Major Crimes division. Army Wives producers ABC Studios and studio-based Mark Gordon Co. are also behind the spinoff.
Army Wives launched its fourth season in April with 3.3 million viewers, the series’ lowest-rated season premiere. Season-to-date, the ensemble drama starring Kim Delaney and Catherine Bell has averaged 3 million total viewers and still ranks as among the top cable draws in the women’s demographics.
The spinoff had been in development for awhile. Last September, a “Who Should Get Their Own Army Wives Spin-Off Show'” survey was posted on Lifetime’s Army Wives blog. Pamela was one of the most popular choices.
Union most recently co-starred on ABC’s Flash Forward this past season.
