Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)/Privacy Act (PA)
Welcome to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act (FOIA/PA) Requester Service Center. This office manages the policies and procedural guidance for DFAS to ensure compliance with the Freedom of Information Act (5 United States Code [U.S.C.] § 552) and the Privacy Act of 1974 (5 U.S.C. § 522a, as amended).
The staff of the Requester Service Center takes pride in serving our customers. We are responsible for ensuring DFAS provides the public and the individuals to whom the records pertain [or their legal representative] with access to releasable government information. We also ensure our agency protects Personally Identifiable Information and all data that is exempt from disclosure.
Federal agencies and components must provide records, within established laws and guidelines, that are equities of [originated at] the respective agency and process appeals received in rebuttal to full or partial denial determinations. However, these laws do not require agencies to conduct research, analyze data, answer questions, create records or complete affidavits.
The FOIA/PA Requester Service Center (RSC)
is not a repository for records maintained by DFAS. Requests received by the RSC are forwarded to the mission/functional area that has responsibility for the subject matter in question.
DFAS was established in 1991. We began processing DoD civilian payrolls in 1995 and Department of Veterans Affairs in 2006. As such, we do not have
ANY records for federal civilian employees who separated prior to our founding or commencement of payroll processing. Please direct your request for records to the
National Archives and Records Administration.
