PlayStation 5 Slim disc and digital consoles have been on sale a few times during the summer. The announcement of the PS5 Pro means discounts on the Slim console following its launch are likely, but there's already some price cuts happening.

If you want the regular PS5, there's currently discounted PS5 consoles at PlayStation Direct, where the PS5 Slim Disc Console has been reduced to £429.99, which is £50 off. The PS5 Slim Digital Console has also received a price cut to £339.99 from £389.99.

They are also offering discounted bundles with an extra controller for both the PS5 Slim Disc Console and the PS5 Slim Digital Console.

The PlayStation 5 Pro was officially announced during a technical presentation with Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PS5 console, on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

It will launch on November 7 for £699.99 / $699.99 / 799.99 Euro / ¥119,980 JPY. Pre-orders launch on September 26, 2024 from participating retailers and via PlayStation Direct.

A sleek grey PlayStation 5 Pro 30th Anniversary Limited Edition console bundle has also been announced, but demand is incredibly high with pre-orders selling out immediately.

The PS5 Pro won't feature a disc drive. Instead, you can buy the attachable disc drive if you need one, along with different face plates you can swap in. The console comes with 2TB of storage, and it's also the same size and width as the current PS5 Slim consoles.

Elsewhere, the PS5 Pro has added an improved GPU with 67% more compute units and 28% faster RAM for memory for loading games and general performance speed. This will mean smoother frame rates and reduced load times.

Meanwhile, Sony has also added PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, AI upscaling, and finally, there's Advanced Ray Tracing, using the increased power to display those super shiny surfaces, outputting at double and triple the speed of the current console.

Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backwards-compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. Additionally, VRR and 8K gaming are also supported.

PS5 Slim deals and UK launch date

The PS5 Slim launched on November 29, 2023. The original PS5 is now discontinued and the stock is mostly sold out. Aside from some pre-owned consoles, retailers have moved to exclusively selling the new slimmer console.

The PlayStation 5 Slim disc console is available for the same RRP as the original console (£479.99), as is the PS5 digital console (£389.99). There is also an attachable disc drive available for £99.99 to upgrade the digital console, in case customers change their mind at a later date.

PS5 Slim vs PS5 Pro - Which should I buy?

The long-rumored PlayStation 5 Slim, launched in the US and UK in November 2023. The standard consoles were replaced by the PS5 Slim as stock became unavailable, and most of the original consoles sold out during Black Friday 2023.

In September 2024, the PS5 Pro was announced with pre-orders starting on September 26, and the console releasing on November 7, 2024. We won't be able to make a full comparison until we can try the console out, but the main points to know are that it's the same size as the PS5 Slim, and now comes with a 2TB hard drive, and no disc drive, which means you'll need to purchase that separately.

In terms of features, the the PS5 Pro will feature the following according to Sony's blog:

Upgraded GPU: Upgraded to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
Advanced Ray Tracing: Even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 Slim console.
AI-Driven Upscaling: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution is an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.

The big changes for the PS5 Slim were that it was 30% smaller than the classic PS5 which launched in 2020, as well as packing an expanded 1TB hard drive (current size is 825GB with 667.2GB of usable space). The bigger hard drives will be in both the PS5 Slim Digital Edition and PS5 Slim Disc Edition. There will also be a detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive available for purchase (£99.99 / $79.99) to allow Digital Editon owners to benefit from discs in case they change their minds later.

PS5 Pro has more storage and will have better performance, load times, and ray tracing, and also upgrade older games you play via backwards compatibility. But it does mean purchasing the disc drive separately if you want to play physical games (£99.99), which comes as standard with the PS5 Slim disc model. Both consoles will still allow you to swap the face plates.

The PS5 Slim will likely reduce in price as the PS5 Pro launches, so that might be enough to inform your decision if you've waited this long to invest in a PlayStation 5. However, if you already own one, and are wondering whether to upgrade, it'll come down to performance analysis vs the current PS5 Slim, which we hope to provide in due course.

Sony has launched its PlayStation Portal (RRP £199.99), allowing you to play its titles more comfortably while on the go. The portable console allows you to stream games from your PS5 console, with an 8-inch LCD, between two halves of a DualSense controller.

It's also available as a bundle including a PS5 Slim Disc console + £10 PSN Voucher for £429.98.

eBay PS5 stock UK deals - October 2024

The cheapest price on standard PS5 consoles overall came from ShopTo via their eBay shop during Black Friday 2023 at just £359.85 (RRP £479.99). This increased to £421.85, before selling out. Occasionally eBay also runs extra discount codes giving you an extra 10-20% discount on purchases.

You could check out eBay generally to get your Sony console second-hand, but we'd advise you to head over there with caution and stick to reputable retailers. Some major stores have their own ebay shops which we'd recommend, such as ShopTo and Music Magpie.

That said, casual sellers will be charged eBay fees, which will be deducted from items and postage. Some companies also sell professionally refurbished consoles for discounted prices.

Prices on eBay will vary quite drastically, so keep in mind that the RRP for the PS5 is now £479.99 for the disc model and £389.99 for the all-digital edition. Make sure you also read buyers' reviews and stick to reputable sellers.

Argos PS5 stock UK deals - October 2024

When it comes to PS5 stock, Argos is a tricky one. Yes, it's a great retailer, and the idea of collecting your console from the catalogue shopper on your local high street is hard to pass up.

However, Argos often lists having PlayStation 5 consoles available... but only in certain areas. You'll have to pop in your postcode on the page to check your chances. If don't mind shopping around, you can select your city or county and then click 'happy to travel' to reveal where your nearest console is.

While Argos' PS5 stock might be harder to predict than the weather, it has delivered some outstanding savings on brand-new PlayStation 5 games during the Black Friday sales, in November 2023 they dropped PS5 disc consoles with Modern Warfare 3 to £399.99.

John Lewis PS5 stock UK deals - October 2024

John Lewis & Partners is a mixed bag when it comes to PS5 stock. However, its best offer during Black Friday 2023 was the PS5 disc console for £389.99. Before this, the PS5 disc and CoD: MW3 bundle dropped to £409.99.

Its PS5 digital console deal with an extra controller for £439.99 was also solid. They have now started selling PS5 Slim consoles, which are available for pre-order.

The biggest advantage of buying PS5 from John Lewis is the two-year warranty that comes as standard with the purchase.

Very has been a very reliable stockist of PS5 consoles for the past few years and often has decent discounts on bundles including one game. We've also found that Very is often Digital Spy readers' stockist of choice when prices have been the same elsewhere.

Unsurprisingly, PlayStation's direct retail site is a very good place to pick up PS5 consoles, as they're often in stock, however, they don't generally have the cheapest prices compared to other retailers.
