Industry Partnerships

Disseminating cutting-edge technologies to industry

EMBL-EBI stores, shares and analyses data produced by life scientists all over the world. Work with us to solve your data challenges.

Industry collaborations

Collaboration is at the heart of how we work. Our research groups collaborate with partners worldwide on a range of projects, publishing in prestigious peer-reviewed journals and producing innovative software databases and tools that are freely available to our users.

Our data resources run in partnership with organisations throughout the world.

A scientific research project is a great way to bring together expertise from EMBL-EBI and industry to work on a common research question.

Collaborations typically range from one year sponsored projects, through to longer term projects involving post-doctoral researchers. In all cases research is conducted under the expert supervision of an EMBL-EBI Group Leader.

Case study

Biocatalysts, a biotechnology company that develop and manufacture speciality enzymes for a variety of industries, partnered with the EMBL-EBI Microbiome Informatics team. Innovate UK supported the collaboration, which resulted in complimentary informatics platforms to help researchers discover relevant enzymes more quickly and efficiently.

The partnership allowed Biocatalysts to develop MetXtra™: a proprietary software platform that allows their researchers to search multiple databases to better identify enzyme candidates.

In parallel, the team at EMBL-EBI developed MGnify, an open data resource containing millions of protein sequences from environmental samples.

Biocatalysts

A global biotechnology company producing speciality enzymes at commercial scales for a variety of industries, such as food, flavour & fragrance, life science, pharma and fine chemicals

Microbiome Informatics team

Responsible for the MGnify resource, which provides access to the metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and assembly analysis services

Our approach

  • Our focus is on pre-competitive collaboration, with data and research outputs published and made freely available to the research community.
  • We do not normally carry out fee-for-service contract research for commercial organisations.
  • All of our research and collaboration agreements are prepared though EMBLEM – the technology transfer partner of EMBL.
  • Is your organisation already a member of our Industry Programme? If so head over to our Members area and look up your company’s contact on the Partner contacts page. They will also be able to help you learn more about us.
